Samson "Sammy"
I haven't posted in quite sometime. Samson has been relatively healthy these last several months - that is up until this weekend. On Saturday I noticed his eye seemed a little more red and inflamed than usual (he has cherry eye that the vet was holding off on fixing until he was neutered.) On Sunday morning it was VERY swollen and he was trying his best to hold it closed. When I got home on Monday I called the vet right away in the morning to schedule an appointment, we went in at 10:30 and after numbing his eye she determined that he had a corneal ulcer, but it was just on the top layer and prescribed ciproflaxin and gentamicin and gave him tramidol for pain. Well...his follow up appointment today was NOT good, the corneal ulcer had gotten MUCH worse and he now just has one membrane holding the eye together, if we lose that membrane he loses his eye. Our vet then referred him to an emergency specialist in Appleton WI, but we ended up taking him to Dr. Sam Vainisi at the Animal Eye Clinic in Denmark, WI - he's supposed to be one of the best in the country and our dogs breeder recommended him. They were able to squeeze us into their schedule this evening at 4:45 and after 5 minutes they were positive that emergency surgery would be their only option. So Samson is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning at 9:00 and I'm so terrified that he won't wake up. The vet even said with bulldogs there's just always a higher chance of death and that I should be prepared for all scenarios. I can't even imagine losing him I would be so devastated! Are there any questions or concerns I should bring up before the surgery to ensure that they are doing everything right (ie anesthesia, etc.) Samson has never had surgery, he's 13 months old and is still intact as his vet was concerned that with his history (really bad case of pneumonia at 4 months) we should hold off until he was completely full grown to neuter. Any comments would be appreciated.

Ask what kind of anesthesia they use for sure....isofluorane is best for bulldogs. Samson will be in my thoughts and am sending best wishes your way.

I'm so sorry. I can feel your worry and stress. The warnings you got from the vet were pretty standard. He's healthy and strong. You did so well by getting him into the vet and then finding a great specialist for Samson..I'm sure the doctor knows how special Bully's are to operate on and he will take ll the precautions needed...I will keep him in my :begging: and I know he will be safe.

AubreysMom... to you and Miss Aubrey tomorrow...

Be safe both of you..and let us know ASAP that they are awake and safe...

I know your worry. My Usko had to have surgery to remove bladder stones when he was 13 monts old and then a corrective one just a few weeks after that. Needles to say I was a total wreck. But everything went well and he recovered perfectly, both times. The vet said that he woke up really well. So your pup is strong and young and will be just fine. Try not to worry(not gonna happen:), it's better for him too.
