Hip Dysplasia

1st time on here was looking for information on other bulldog owners experiance with hip dysplasia. We r 1st owners of a soon to b 1yr old english bulldog that i try not to leave home with out,she is my buddy that i love to have with me and if i cant take her she goes to her aunts to spend time with her other family so she isnt left by her self much. i took her to the vets today to get her ACL fixed that we found out that she tore both legs ACL. then the vet called later to tell me that she has hip dysplasia and he will talk to me more when i pick her up tomorw. Well nothing like dropping a bomb in my lap and leave me hanging so i go to the lap top to get more info on what i am going to have to deal with tomorw. Would like some in put on other owners that have dealt with this would b great.

Well first off let me say welcome to the site and glad you found us. Second sorry about your baby, and I think I would get a second opinion. Is your vet a good bully vet? If not, I would find one. I do not have any experience with this, but I'm sure someone will come along.

I dont have exp with HD but I do know that there a lot of vets that will say surgery and other things like that without really understanding other options. I am in the Jersey area where in PA are you from???? There are other members here that would be able to reccomend a vet in PA [MENTION=2894]2BullyMama[/MENTION]. Hello - I have a lot of experience with hip dysplasia AND torn ACLs in my bullies - the torn ACL is often a symptom of hip dysplasia because the dog is overcompensating on its knees for bad hips.

You need to go to an orthopedic specialist to have your dog properly diagnosed and treated - PERIOD - your regular vet should not be handling this situation.

There are various methods of repairing ACLs but the one with the highest success rate on bulldogs is TPLO - more expensive but it's permanent. My bulldog Bentley had it at 10 months old on one knee, then 25 months on the other knee and both knees lasted him a lifetime. The bad news is that it was $2700 per knee - and you MUST do one at a time.

The hips are a different story - only a specific set of x-rays can show exactly what you're dealing with but bulldogs have some options since they carry most weight in front. My bulldog Truman had his hip pop out of socket at 10 weeks so we were able to give him surgery that placed the hip back in the socket as well as made the pelvic bone grow to produce a tighter fit.

I know this is a lot to digest but the first thing to do is get to a specialist - who has seen this many, many times and knows how to properly diagnose and treat these conditions from additional years of education and practice!

[MENTION=860]sheshistory[/MENTION] gave you get advice and information. My girl has HD, as well was diagnosed at about 6 months and has not needed any surgery. There are different levels of the issue and you should she a specialist to determine if you can treat with medication, laser treatments or need surgery.

I found out my girl Talulah has HD a month ago, she'll be two soon, my vet did an X-ray and that pretty much comfirmed it. He said I could take her to the vet college in Colorado and they would do surgery on her hip for $3500.00. So we just have her on joint supplements ( $65.00), keeping her weight down and taking her swimming and short walks to prevent muscle atrophy, pain pills as needed.

Welcome to the site, and sorry to hear about your pup. Mine was diagnosed with mild HD. [MENTION=860]sheshistory[/MENTION] 's article was a great read if you don't know to much on the subject. I really recommend it.
We decided to have Guinn x-rayed at 1 year of age just to see if we would be up against HD. She did not show any symptoms, and both her parents tested with clear hips...but we know that doesn't mean anything and wanted to know. She has it in both hips, but pretty mild. We've started her on GlycoFlex III supplements, as well as Ester-C. I did a TON of research on all the different supplements, and this was the one I decided on. She gets lots of low impact exercise, and we've slimmed her down.
If she isn't even a year and has already had ACL surgery on both knees, it may be a more severe form of HD. I would do as others recommended and see an orthopedic specialist
