Hi everyone,

I need some advice please.
Lily went for her check up yesterday and thankfully she is finally doing much better after everything she has been through.
The vet said she looks real good. She finally got here shots that she wasn't able to get because she has been sick since pretty much day 3 of taking her home.
However the vet called this am to tell me that Lily still has parasites. And now I have to get her a powder mixed in her food once a day for 5 days. Is this ever going to end???
She was already on meds for the parasites the first week. Has anyone else had an issue with parasites? Is this something that should just go away?
I'm a first time bully & pet owner so I'm all new to this. What even causes parasites?
I just want to enjoy my Lily. She has been on meds for just about the whole month that we have had her.
Don't get me wrong I'm very thankful because I know things could of gotten a lot worse than they did.
But I'm just want it to be over for her.
I would be very greatful for any advice.

Lisa

I have no experience with parasites at all but my gosh. Do you know if this vet is a bulldog vet? Not that there is anything wrong with a regular vet but bullies being so different, you may want to switch if this isnt a bully vet. I go to a regular vet for basic things since it is closer and easier but I go other places for the bigger things if needed. Hopefully somebody will be along with help. maybe Davidh knows more about this.

She had treatment for the parasites before she got really poorly? Maybe thats why the treatment didnt work properly because she didnt ingest the full course due to being sick.
Parasites are ingested...I'm not sure but she may have gotten them from her Mom whilst suckling, or from dirty water or even from eating in a dirty area...poor sweety.

Hopefully now she is stronger the meds will work properly and the parasites will be expelled from her little body. Keep her potty area clean during this time too :)

I've never dealt with parasites but am sure someone can give you better advise soon

Most puppies are born with parasites, (worms) but this also depends on what parasite you are speaking of. Puppies need to be dewormed a few tomes to clear the egg hatching cycle. Even if they are, puppies live to step in poop and then step in their water bowl, take a drink then the process can start all over again. Especially if it is coccidia.

If it is giardia, then the treatments will be more.

So I guess we need to know what your little pup has, but it is not unusual for the treatment you are describing.

I hope all is better really soon!

The vet isn't a bulldog vet. He does seem to know about the breed but I would like a vet that deals with bulldogs more.
I have looked for one but as of yet I haven't found one.
I live in Yonkers, NY. I did find some in NY but not even close to me.
I am going to call the vet back and find out exactly what parasites she has.
She was on the first does of meds for 5 days. But in that time she did come kennel cough that lead to a upper respiratory infection.
She has been on 3 different meds in the past month.
Poor girl.

Hey I live in North Jersey and have 2 different people you could try! You could travel to Tinton Falls NJ who have bulldog specialist(more expensive b/c its a emergency hospital but you get the best care from the best doctors) its Garden State Animal Hospital, or there is a vet who is a bullie vet and I have heard that he is the best in the city! He is Dr. Paul Kinnear..The tinton falls hosp is if its something serious or the vet isnt available...Good luck hope all goes well

Dozer was just diagnosed with Giardia parasites. The vet gave us some Flagyl tablets to take 4x time a day over the next 10 days. As far as I know its common for dogs/puppies to get some type of parasites atleast once in their lifetime.

Yes most pups get them and you have some good advise above. Hopefully the meds the vet gave you will get rid of them. It will get better, just hang in there. Poor babt bully has had a rough time of it. Give Lily a big hug from us.

dr. kinnear is on staten island...he is the bullie vet around. his patients rave about him. i live in rockland county and we take our dogs to a vet that has frenchies and has had bullies in the past. parasites are so easy to get for dogs...it took quite a while for jameson to kick them...

How is Lily? Did you get to a new vet?
I didn't find a new yet as of yet but i did find out the name of the parasite that she has.
It's called Giardia parasite.
Ever heard of it?
The strange thing is Lily does not seem sick over it. It was only cause her poop tested positive for it did I find out about it.
She now has to take Panaur in powder form for 5 days.
But I think it's making her sick now. She seemed mushy last night & this morning.
I'm at my wits end with this poor little girl. I hope she gets better soon.
