Default Awww please say Chuy doesn't have cherry eye...

Sorry I can't get a picture that shows it well. It is only his left eye that I can see his third eyelid. Going to call the vet Monday to take him in.

Please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors... I probably have both bulldogs laying on me or fighting for attention...

If it is cherry eye it is very small. The cherry eye we've had has been much bigger and scary ugly looking.

I'm hoping it is something that just needs a few eye drops.

It looks too mild to be cherry eye. My Wilsons cherry eye was much redder and nearly covered half his eye and I found it quite distressing to see.

It could be the beginning of it -- I have a link to a youtude video showing how to massage it back in place... I'll go find and post back here

research and technology, we have options:
    • Medications - eye-drops which are an anti-inflammatory that reduces the swelling.
    • Nonsurgical Replacement of the Gland -- painless process consists of eye-drops, warm compresses and massage while applying gentle pressure with your index finger in a circular motion. Once the swelling is reduced you can gently return the gland to its place. This technique may need to be done several times since the gland can 'pop' out again.
    YouTube video -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk07m6yJNlM
    • First surgical option -- Tucking method, where a single stitch is permanently placed to pull the gland back where it belongs. There are some possible complications:
      • Stitch becomes untied, this could result in the eye being scratched by the suture, which would cause sudden pain and the suture thread may be visible.
      • The tuck may not hold permanently. This procedure is notorious for failure and frequently a second tuck is needed.
    • Second surgical option -- Tissue is removed from directly over the actual gland. This procedure is more challenging as it is not easy to determine how much tissue to remove. Dissolvable stitches are used to close the gap so that the tightening of the incision pushes the gland back in place. Again, there are some possible complications:
      • Inflammation or swelling as the stitches dissolve.
      • Inadequate tightening of the tissue gap may lead to recurrence of the cherry eye.
      • Failure of the stitches to hold could cause injury to the eye depending on the type of suture used.
    • Third surgical option -- Third eyelid tear gland is removed. This is a last resort option as the potential complication is life long dry eye, which would depend on the upper tear gland being able to produce enough tears to keep the eye moist. Daily eye-drops will be required.

Same here - Penny's was larger & more red. I did read that they can become inflamed from environmental allergens (carpet, etc), or in Penny's case rough play.

One of your pics in the other thread shows the redness in the eye. Hopefully it'll calm down and not be actual cherry eye.

How does Cherry eye impact showing? Is it something they can be disqualified for? After surgery I mean? Having no idea on what is or isn't allowed to be changed I'm just wondering.

It does look a little better today. His vet appointment got pushed to tomorrow with his regular vet - he gets another round of shots. Hoping they just push it in and give antibiotic eyedrops or steroid eyedrops (I'm not sure what they use). If he requires more work than I get to pick between a bulldog vet in New Berlin and an eye vet in Pewaukee. @BruceP & @LariP - unless you have any better recommendations?

@LariP - I haven't looked into that much since I am only concerned about his comfort and health (I am afraid to have him put under). But those are great questions. I was told that it shouldn't effect his ability to show but if it did we would disclose the information and not try to hide it.

Alyssa.... Our vet said that he would send HRH to a specialist if she needed enthopian surgery so I guess we aren't any help in recommending someone. Luckily, he says that she doesn't need the surgery now after seeing how well the Optimmune gel is working in her eyes.

Sorry it is. That is how Raven's started that night, then as the night progressed it got worse. I think the fact that she decided to rough house with my son also exacerbated it. I did manage to massage it back in once she had woken up from her nap and was nice and calm. It definitely didn't bother her but it was killing me to see it like that. Thankfully since I massaged it back in that night we have not had it happen again. Good luck.

Finn has this on occasion as well. I hope with Chuy's case it will be something that is easily remedied, like just a massage back into place.

For this I think I would opt for the eye specialist if they refer you to somebody if it were my choice, but perhaps once you see your regular vet tomorrow she will be able to give you her opinion too.

Mostly I hope it's something that will get better on it's own, or with non invasive treatment.

    Keep us posted.
