Eye Ulcers

my baby has a huge ulcer in her eye. she is old, 11 and was misdiagnosed by TWO vets and so this has been going on for 2 months before I found out what it really was. Furious! anyway, this thing is very painful and I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through this? I need encouragement and information.

I have never had that problem with Mocha but she did had Cherry Eye when young. She went trhough surgery and have never had another problem with her eyes(knock on wood!!!). Is she going to have surgery soon?? What are the Vets instructions?? I would guess that surgery would have been recomended.?

I am truly sorry that Margo was not diagnosed properly.

Certain eye medications can actually cause the eye to ulcerate. For example, if the vet finds a small scratch or inflammation of the eye and prescribes a steroid drop or gel, and there is a tiny ulcer starting to grow, then the steroid can actually cause the ulcer to worsen (huge amounts too), so each time you are putting the medicine in you are actually making it worse.

Now that the ulcer has been identified, you should be putting in some antibiotic (preferably gel type, it holds longer) in 3 or more times a day. On day 3 or 4 you are going to wonder if it is even helping. The eye does not heal very fast, so hopefully within a week you will notice an improvement. And make sure to squeeze the tube from the bottom very lightly, otherwise you will waste a lot and it will seem to come out endlessly. Don't be surprised if you need more than one tube.

Hmmmm.... sounds exactly like what Norm had and he had to go see an eye specialist at Purdue. He ended up having surgery on both eyes. She said once it gets bad, the healed eye tissue can't adhere, so it scrapes off over and over. She said it is very, very painful. The only thing that will help it is surgery called Thermokeratoplasty.

Gent ointment will worsen it, so please, don't use that. Norman is on Tobramycin drops. Good luck and keep us posted.

My Wilson had an eye ulcer so bad they sewed his eye shut for a couple of weeks but once they took out the stitches it was all healed up. No problems since.

Wow! you guys are great! I was told all about the tissue not being able to adhere, but never was a surgery mentioned that could possibly remove it.

right now what has been done is the eye has been scraped with a needle to remove the tissue build up, then they placed a contact lens over the eye and insisted that Margo wear an E-collar for 10 days. I have an antibiotic drop, gatifloxacin and a gel called oxytetracycline. I have to put these in 3X's per day. She has been feeling so bad for so long now I am worried there may be permanent damage, we are on day 4 of the treatment and are looking forward to seeing some positive results. The vet said this is very hard to cure and could take 2 more weeks after the first 10 days of treatment! BOTH of the meds given to me by the previous vets had steroids in them! UGH!!!

today is a little better than yesterday... at least she is eating, but this E-collar thing is such a pain. Margo has no neck so the silly thing keeps falling off over her head. I've had to "modify" it by punching holes in it and tying strings through it and attaching them to her harness. Sleeping is just a joke, she can't get comfortable and therefore I am up all night as she walks up and down the bed.

Again thank you guys so much for the information, it just feels better to know I'm not alone in this and that my girl will not die from this!
