Well.... Sumo was supposed to get spayed on Monday. She was originally supposed to get spayed a few months ago but because she got sick it was postponed. My vet wanted to do it before she came into heat to avoid her getting breast cancer.

I was so upset today to see that she went into her first heat.

I'm hoping to get some advice and info about what to expect from this.

Anything is great and useful.
Thanks so much

Don't worry...just wait it out and then have her spayed. Lots of vets like them to have a heat first anyway.

Well DO keep her safe from those boy dogs!

Well first of all get your supply of baby wipes ready because bullys can't reach "down there" so you're going to have to keep her clean.

She's going to be just like us ... basically will feel really crappy for a while so prepare to baby her and give her lots of cuddles on the couch.

Also, make sure she is WAY past her heat before you get her spayed!! We had a foster, Tinkerbell, who needed to be spayed before she could be put up for adoption. Just as she was about to go in she too came in to heat. The vet told us to make sure that she had definitely finished her heat before the operation as they can bleed a lot more heavily if the operation is done too soon after or during a heat cycle.

It's all very individual just as it is with humans .. it may be light .... or it may be heavy ... there really is no answer to this one I'm afraid!

Ahhhhh not on the sheets :cursing:!

Millie went into heat a day before her spaying was scheduled. Her heat cycle only lasted two weeks (I've heard it can last for 3) and it wasn't that heavy but its different for each dog. My vet didn't think it was a big deal to wait but she was spayed two weeks after the heat ended. We tried to fashion her a little bully diaper but she wasn't having it. I know other people use baby diapers and some make their own. I never tried a store bought one because I couldn't imagine it would stay on her rump... or that she wouldn't try to eat it . At home I just kept her off the carpet/couches and cleaned the wood floor constantly with Clorox wipes. I remember in the beginning thinking that I would just have to follow her around everywhere but it really wasn't that bad.

Make sure when you clean her "ladybits" (I just used sensitive baby wipes) that you also dry the area well and if it becomes irritated you apply a little Desitin (diaper rash cream) or vaseline. Other than that, Millie was a bit more sluggish than usual and on a walk she had to pee every few feet. good luck!

We use baby diapers with a diaper holder made for dogs we but from a pet supply place on line. I have heard some people just use the pull-ups and work fine. Just have to see what fits your girl. I would wait at least 3 to 4 weeks after her heat cycle to spay her.

Bella went into heat just before her spay. We didn't know if she would even go into heat because of her illness and her lack of development when she was a small puppy. Well she did and because of the disease she had, my vet consulted with the specialist and they didn't want to finish the heat. They thought is would be too much for her condition, so the spayed her while in heat. She did fine, did tear her belly open about 4 days later getting in a food fight with Abby......so onto another surgery, this time her and I stayed in the RV until healed.

Just wait it out, When Bella needed diapers, I too bought the skin-baby kind (cheap generic ones at the grocery store) with a Puppy cover.

Hi Everyone,

here's my next question. It looks like sumo's lady parts are VERY swollen. It started just before she went into heat. Will this go back to her normal size after? it looks like its taking over !!!! basically touches the ground when she pees!

She'll go back to normal. Liz had her first heat a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for asking all the questions I should have. How old is Sumo? Oh, and Liz bled very light. I only noticed an odor on her bed, but her lady parts were dirty, so I had to clean her often with wipes. She was also a tad miserable and sluggish. It passed in 2 weeks or maybe less.

SUMOPUP Yes they do get very swollen ... HUGE ... and yes it will go back to normal afterwards. Just make sure it doesn't look as if it is infected or sore - keep it clean for her!!

Sumo is 7 and half months. The bleeding isnt SO bad, but its not great. I have sheets covering the carpet, and my bed (for when she comes to sleep with me in the morning)... but its a bloody mess! I am anxiously awaiting the end of this. I have to take her out tonight and i'm going to have to put her in some underwear so she doesn't make a mess.

Here's a laugh for everyone... sumo wrestler.jpg I hope you can all see the underwear she's wearing. Now she'as actually a Sumo Wrestler
