Hi Everyone -

Unfortunetly the circumstances that brought me to this site are sad :(. My 14 week old english bulldog, Samson, has been hospitailized for 2 days at an emergency vet with pneumonia. My thought and my breeders thought is that the cause is from the nasal bordetella vaccine, however my vet disagrees. Besides this, I had a very happy pup, who's incredibly sweet and friendly.

I'm so sorry about Samson's hospitalization and illness. How is he doing now? Is he still in the hospital? He is awfully adorable! Welcome to this site and please keep us updated on his condition.

Im sorry to hear about this issue. I have no advice because I don't even have my puppy yet and don't know what to tell you. All I can say is everyone here is super helpful. I also am from Wi so I was curious where you are from.

I am so sorry for your pup and hope he pulls through this. It is the nasal bordetella vaccine that caused it. We tell all our clients that buy a pup from us to not let their vet use the nasal vaccine on them, but use the shot instead. If you are not going to board them then they do not need it. A good friend of ours who is also a breeder in the Houston area tells her client this too but one did not heed the warnings and let her vet do the nasal vaccine and her pup got pneumonia and almost did not make it. This is the bad thing about using a vet that does not know the breed well. Our vet would never use the nasal but gives the shot instead. We will keep Samson in our prayers and please keep us posted.

I will keep Samson in my thoughts and hopefully he gets well enough to come home soon. Welcome to EBN, by the way. You will love it here.

We're hoping that he'll be doing well enough tomorrow to get him to the breeders house. She has her own nebulizer, and oxygen tank - I would honestly feel more comfortable with him at her house than at an ER vet. It seems like he's ONLY gotten worse since he was admitted on Tuesday. The internal specialist that is overseeing his care said that his lungs are sounding better but the problem is now due to the fact that his trachea is so small that all the gunk he's coughing up is getting stuck on it's way up. I drove out to see him this afternoon with my dad, and he just looks sooooo pathetic and super tired, my daughters are an absolute mess without him and were so hoping for him to come home today :(. I'm in Manitowoc WI and will be switching to a bulldog vet in Lockport, IL (we have a place in Justice, IL so not too far.) I'm just praying that he makes it through!!

I am sorry you have to go through this. I will keep your pup in my prayers. I am relieved that you are locating a vet familiar with the breed. Like others mentioned--that will make all of the difference.

Please keep us posted.

Well..I have a different experience. Jake had the nasal bortedella and my vet specializes in bulldogs! All jakes brothers go there and they all had the same! In fact, my vet also has a bulldog of her own! Talk about different opinions!!! I think they should have this protection..either way you want..because dogs can pick up this virus ANYWHERE! Even the vets office. They try extremely hard to isolate infected dogs but occasionally one slips through! I would think ..in my most humble opinion..your pup could have been exposed in a lot of places. The MOST important thing is that your sweet Samson gets well and QUICKLY! Good luck and I'm so sorry you and your daughters have to deal with all this instead of holding that sweet pup!

:welcome:I hope you get your baby home very soon. I opted for Mocha not to have the vaccine this time around. She is always with us and the chances of her getting this where very slim, so we decided against it. But, the vet office i go to is not very knowledgable with the breed(i dont care what they say, its true) and they sometimes push for things I know for a fact Mocha doesnt need.I will pray for you guys and you have come to the best site there is out there for English Bulldog Health. The best part is all the advice you will get and all the love too:heart:

I hate that you had to find us under such terrible conditions. I hope you little Sammy gets better real quick. I know what it is like to watch a young pup cling to their life. It is so hard knowing you are not able to do anything. My prayers go to you and Sammy. Please keep us updated.

We called for an update this evening and he's improved a bit. I had my bf call and ask them to put a pillow in the oxygen tank so that he could rest his head on it. When we went to visit this afternoon he wasn't able to fall asleep, because laying down made it harder for him to breathe. He was trying to sleep sitting up but it just wasn't working too well. Hopefully he'll get lots of good sleep tonight and the meds will start working.

Oh no. I'm so sorry you're going thru this. My heart aches for you and your family. It's so hard when they are young and the small trachea doesn't help. I went thru the same thing but not with a good end, but my puppy was the runt of the litter. But this is little Sammy and I will pray very hard for him. Once he gets well you'll have to watch and keep him at a good weight with a good food. That's good that your breeder has her own nebulizer and oxygen tank and I hope it will help him. I know how hard it is. These bulldogs are so darn loveable it's impossible not to feel such a total attachment to them. Take care of yourself too cause Sammy is going to want to catch up on all those belly rubs and smooches he's been missing.::heart::
