Hi, hopefully someone on here has some advice for me. I have a 20 week old English bulldog male Reggie. He was well socialised with friends dogs plus we have a 10 year old Dalmatian all was going well. Now for no reason whatsoever he growls and goes completely crazy at any dogs he doesnā€™t know. Making walking him an absolute nightmare. I have to constantly warn people he may growl. I think he is doing it out of fear but Iā€™m really donā€™t know what to do. I received advice where I was told walk the opposite direction and treat him if he sees other dogs but doesnā€™t react. It still has t had an effect. He is fine with friends dogs still. Any advice will be greatly received.

Is it an angry growl? Or just a growl? Has he every tried to actually hurt another dog? Often their bark is really just that, a bark. Brisket sounds so mean most of the time, but heā€™s just playful. He will never intentionally try to hurt another dog.

What I would do is use a Herm Springer (prong) collar. If you do not know how correctly, you must find out(probably on you tube) Then you will have more control of your dog. When you are walking him, you must feel in control, and at ease, especially if you see another dog. He will FEEL what you are feeling. Keep on walking, don't slow down, don't stop, and use the collar to control his reaction, and don't speed up, or slow down. Don't talk to him, use your collar correctly and continue on.Act like it's no big deal. Don't give him treats at all. You need to control him with authority, not treats. Eventually, when he behaves, then you could give him a treat, if you feel it's necessary. My dogs are pretty well behaved, but whenever I take them off property, or to the vet, I put that collar on them-just to feel more secure for emergency. cojd2

Jackson has a very deep, growly bark- he sounds SO ferocious! When we walk, he will bark like that at other dogs, but if they greet each other, he is absolutely fine. Of course I always ask the other owner if they can meet, and assure them that his bark is just that. He has NEVER shown 1 iota of aggression to another dog, except for this bark. When they meet, he becomes very submissive, rolling on his back!

He's just a pup so I would not go for any harsh methods but try to figure out why he reacts like that. Has something happened that can explain why he behaves like this (has he been scared by some dog?)? And what does the Dalmatian say about it - do you walk them together? If not, could that be an option to see how the Dalmation deals with the little one's behaviour? Castor learned a lot from dogs we met when he was a pup. He was never aggressive but if he was too pushy, older dogs we met would tell him so at once, and more experienced dog owners would often tell me to trust that dogs learn from each other. Now, that is of course only an option of you can trust that other dog (Castor was educated by nice balanced female dogs).

As others have stated - you have to be in control, if you are nervous or apprehensive of his behavior, he knows it and will feeel he has to protect because you are not leader/boss
