Hello! My name is Gianna and i am a proud mama of a bulldog! His name is Rocco and he will be a year old July 26TH! I purchased him from Petland in Naperville for a hefty few thousand dollars. Only to find out i was getting a sick puppy.. little did i know at the time that those puppies were coming from Amish mills.. Anyways, he had a horrible respiratory infection when i got him that racked up about 3 thousand in medical bills that i had to fight them to pay.. at 4 months old he developed a tumor that i had to get surgically removed and came back benign(THANK GOD). I haven't had any issues until now.. i noticed after moving from a nice big spacious house to a more confined apartment with very little backyard space that Rocco has started peeing blood.. i took him to the vet right away and they ran some tests and did some xrays and said he just has a bladder infection. He had a weeks dose of Doxycycline and still didn't improve. i brought him back and now they're saying his prostate is very swollen and they also ran a 'scan' and said he might have a bladder stone.. He is on antibiotic for his prostate and i dropped him off today to see a specialist to make sure he for sure has a stone because they're wanting to operate on my baby while he is under they recommend castrating him as well to prevent further prostate issues... he always has water and food.. i have him on Fromm salmon but he was on beef frittata before hand.. i was just wondering if anyone has any info on why this could be happening and if castrating him is necessary.. thank you!

to EBN!!! First of all let me say I'm SO sorry for what you and your poor baby have been going thru... I'm glad that you have stuck by him and are trying to get him well. I'm going to tag some members that have dealt w/stones, from what I understand castration is the what they recommend. I'll be praying for your boy, and please keep us posted on what you decide to do.

We did have to have Tyson neutered due to an enlarged prostate, it was the only way to save him. After his neuter, his prostate took about 2-3 weeks go shrink back down to normal size.

Thats great to hear! I am definitely wanting to neuter Rocco to prevent prostate infections and treat the one he has now.. the only issue i have is getting it passed his daddy because he desperately wants to breed him but with all the health issues hes had and the suffering that he is going through now, i dont think he really has much of a choice anymore. Id rather do whats best for Rocco's health!

Tell his daddy he won't have a dog at all unless you address that issue. That is a very serious issue to have, could take his life. Breeding isn't simple, you want good strong blood lines, with no health issues and it requires vet as bulldogs cannot breed naturally. I think its in Rocco's best interest to be neutered so that removes the testosterone and shrinks his prostate back down. With it enlarged, it pushes against all his other organs, very dangerous.

Some of his health issues could be passed down to his "kids"...I highly recommend against breeding him. Amish bred pups(regardless of breed) are typically unhealthy...so what you are experiencing is par for the course.
Please get him neutered and prostate removed. There just no good reason not to.
And when you get a chance, please post pics of Rocco...we'd love to see him.

Be sure your surgeon has experience with bulldogs, and putting them under. Very very important.

Welcome to EBN. So sorry it's cause of your babies bad health. I absolutely advice against breeding him. Wouls you like somebody else to go through what you're going through intentionally? A lot of his issues can be hereditary and he can pass them on to his puppies. Were would you find a healthy bitchwith an owner/breder who would want use Rocco with all his health issues?
It is very important to know what type of stones he has. Some are highly hereditary and others not. It also determines the proper management in the future after the operation. Castrating is very wise in every case. Good luck!

How would i be able to determine if the stones are hereditary? Because if so, it would have to be covered under is warranty and i wouldnt have to come out of pocket for the removal of the stone.. only for the castration?
