I need someone who can give me some advice about a lot of health issues my 6 month old bully is having. When we brought her home a week later she started to cough and then while eating she inhaled her food and almost died, got ammonia. We fixed her up and was good untie the oak leaves in the back yard started to fall got a really bad rash while on Royal Canin so I know it's not the food. Went to vet got a shampoo worked a little, so went back to vet got a antibiotic did't work. She is now losing her hair and has little bumps along with the red spots on her belly. She has scratched her self raw, now she is limping because her right hind leg is popping in her knee. I have an apt with a specialist next week for her leg. I'm hoping he can also tell me what's wrong with her skin. Oh this morning I found a nasty sore on her tail. I talked with the breeder and none of his other puppies have had any problems. I just don't know what to do any more. She is a very loving little girl and follows me every where.

Beamers83 The first thing I would do it try using the bland diet to make sure it's not a food allergy. With how widespread it is I would not be surprised. When you went to the vet did they do a skin scrape on her to determine that she didn't have mange or some sort of staff infection?

No they didn't. What would be a bland diet? I also give her omega 3 with her food, my aunt has a dog with allergies and told me to do that.

Ok..Take a deep breath. The first thing I can tell you is it very well could be her food. Food causes so many problems with Bully's ànd it's a mystery we all struggle with. You can ànd should slw down her eating. This can lead to bloat and we have had a member lose his wonderful bully because of this. Get a slow feed bowl (stainless) or a slow feed ball. We opted for the ball with Jake because I had trouble finding a stainless bowl. As far as finding the best food..it's. A Trial and error process without allergy screening. Lots of bully's have problems with chicken. Also Royal Canin is not a very high rated food. If Betty was doing great on Royal Canin, I would say leave her on it. But honestly, most of her problems ound food related. I will tag cowsmom and maybe she can help with food.

:welcome3: to EBN, glad you joined!! So sorry your poor Betty is having such a rough time right now ... for food I'm going to tag @cowsmom she can help with all sorts of food questions, she is really great!! With the medicated shampoo, when you bathed her did you lather her up and let the shampoo stay on her skin for about 10 minutes? I know it's a long time to have to wait but it helps so much to leave it on for a longer amount of time. I'm going to find the bland diet in the nutrition board so you will know how to prepare it.

Hi there! Sorry you are having so many problems :(

Let us back up a bit, because there is a lot of information that is being left out so I have questions.

Has Betty been to the vet specifically for the skin and itchiness yet?

Is Betty currently taking anything for the itchies prescribed by the vet? Any special shampoos? Sounds like a possible skin infection, which many times will need antibiotics and/or steriod to help heal it.

If it is possibly an allergy, you can give benedryl (plain human kind with no additives) comes in 25mg capsules and it is 1mg per pound in canines for dosage.

Besides the oak tree leaves and winter weather, is there anything else new you have used? Shampoos, laundry detergeant, toys, ect?

I have switched her from royal Canin she is now on natures recipe. Yes she has slowed down after almost dying, she does not eat too fast now. Oh what should I do so her tears don't produce so much? It's causing her together a yeast infection.

She has been seen by the local vet for the rash. They ave her antibiotics for two week it was calvomox. Didn't work! She was also given BPO-3 Benzoyl peroxide 3%. Said to bath her twice a week. It helped a little. I have been giving her Zyrtec for children cause that's what I read from another site. No I have not changed anything lately.

I am going to take her to a specialist for her leg next week and I am hoping they can tell me what is wrong with her skin too.

WOW, poor baby, hopefully the specialist will help. In the mean time you should know in a few weeks if the new food helps.

The over tearing is probably an allergic reaction too. Start with the food - try a different one - the bland diet for a month will tell you a lot. If cooking that for her won't work for you you could have the vet prescribe an Ultra Z dog food. Hills and Royal Canine make them. Prescription needed and you get it from the vet or Petsmart. If it's food related, that should clear the symptoms up, then you can start trying to find a food that works. A limited ingredient one might be needed. Wellness Simple line is one of many good ones out there.
If she's still having problems you have to look for other stuff.
Make sure they've checked for mange. Does she spend much time outside? It could be the grass or plants where she lays down. Also, it could be your laundry detergent or fabric softener if you wash her stuff - try a hypoallergenic one of both. All detergent makes one and so does Downey softener. Do you have rugs? Could be something there too, if not it could be what you clean your floors with. Good luck, keep us posted.

Poor baby , hope the specialist can help! My pup broke out in hives not that long ago - red bumps all over the belly and tons of scratching. Benedryl is a god sent! It might be a good idea to try that to ease the itch - she may get sleepy though. I called my vet before doing this just to make sure.
Could the sore on her tail be from poop being left on the area - I know my bully has a high maintenance bum. I have to wipe him every time he poops pretty much. If it is in or around the tail pocked I suggest cleaning the area with baby wipes, drying it thoroughly with cloth, then use penatin cream - polysporin or a combo of both and see if that helps. I also use Gold Bond powder sometimes to keep the area dry.
Best of luck, hope she is ok!

You are doing the right things. Personally,I would opt for an allergy test and try not to get into the food carosel then. Sorry, I didn't see in your initial post that you had her on Zyrtec or the other things you are doing. One step at a time.
