Hello, I'm Jennifer and we just welcomed a Female bulldog into our home , Lola is 18 months old and is very good with our other animals but seem scared if you try to pet her to fast or something is dropped. ive never owned a shy dog and was wondering if anyone has any advice to help her, its sad when we are outside and she hears something and takes off running like someone shot her :(

:welcome:.. So happy you found us..yes..Bully's are quite chicken! I can imagine Lola is feeling insecure. Change is very hard for them..I'm certain she will relax as she settles in. Try and be patient and just take things slow! My Jake ...who we've had since he was 8 weeks old... STILL has to be "escorted" by a certain Bully killer broom! That broom has been in the same spot his entire life! For some reason, after dark, when he must venture past it to go to bed, it turns evil! I literally have to walk between him and the broom. At the very last moment..he starts running in place and slips ànd slides his way to safety in his bed! EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! :bang:

:welcome3: you may be able to help Lola be less timid and you may not.

HRH was 3 1/2 when we got her and one of her affectionate nicknames is Princess Chicken :poo:
She is terrified immediately by any sudden noise, or movement. she will bark and run and hide in her bed under the safety of daddy's desk.
Even a breeze coming in the window will send her scurrying for cover. That happened again just this morning.
It took us a year to vanquish the boogie man from the kitchen long enough to get her to eat in there. But she only stays a short time and then scurries back to the safety of "her room".

Welcome! Gio is 2 and is a big chicken as well, he's scared of planes! Yup planes! And it doesn't help living 10minutes away from Logan airport! He literally looks up in the sky every time we go outside! He's been this way ever since we adopted him last December! He has gotten less jumpy since December though, so maybe Lola will start to get less jumpy as well!

Our Boxer is a complete freak. Paper drops near her and the world is ending. She is 12 so I think the hope she will grow out of it is gone. She does well outside and with people. Either she will adjust or you eventually adjust and it becomes the new norm. A lot of could do with how she was housed when she was younger. I know my parents dog they got at 18 months and had been with a breeder with lots of dogs and she had gotten bullied by the others and wasn't used to living in a house. It took her about 6 months to adjust, and now she is only mildly skittish.

Good luck!

:welcome: Glad you joined. Like others said, just be patient and slow. She may always be scared of something. We used to use a kiddie gate for Bruin & Lilly...well one time it fell over and ever since then that gate is the devil. Lilly is much worse of a scaredy cat....if we have anything abnormal in our hands...oh the horror. Just last night a paper towel roll fell on the floor...holy crap, you would have thought it was attacking her. Not until Bruin came to inspect did she stop barking and then attacked it.

My Emma was the same, when we first got her. We took her to Petsmart, which has alot of noise and started training. We would encourage family and friends to make noise close to her, but prior to noise, we had her sit down and said "leave it- waved hand in front of her face and held onto leash, and held a treat in our hands and let her nibble on it, and spoke calm and soothing to her. while noise was happening. Wanted her to focus on treat and us during noise. It took little time, but it worked. Now, noise does not usually bother her.
