Hi all, I am brand new to the website. My husband and I owned a bulldog, but only for a short minute. I adopted a beautiful little male, brindle and white, as a Christmas gift for my husband. He was wonderful. We named him Mac. WE got Mac his shots, fed him organic food, and loved him so much. Unfortunately, Mac was a very sick puppy. After we had him for a month or two, and after two or three trips to the vet, we could not figure out why Mac wasn't eating and playing, and gaining weight. As it turns out, Mac was born with a collapsed trachea and a hernia. We took him to a specialist to discover the only solution was a series of surgeries. I would have had the surgeries done, however, the specialist said that because of Macs condition, he had less then a 50% chance of survival. Under the advisement of the specialist, we put Mac to rest. It was the hardest thing we have ever done. Awful. And to add insult to injury, the woman who sold us Mac refused to make right our situation. Poor breading practices was not to blame, however, she sold us a sick puppy and refused to right her wrong. I don't even care about the few thousand we spent on Mac trying to make him well, it is the heartache of losing him that hurts the most.

Well, enough about the sob story. I joined because my husband and I are looking to adopt again. I wanted to know thoughts on AKC vs. CKC. I know with this breed we always risk problems, but I want to avoid the heartache we have already experienced. The parents of Mac were both AKC registered, and Mac was also AKC registrable. I'm not sure that this means anything regarding his conditions. The specialist said Mac's problems are common of the breed, Mac was just unfortunate to have multiple problems at the same time at such a young age. So...there is my story. Any info would be appreciated.

Wow! You have come to the right place. Let me start by saying I'm so sorry for your loss. It must be heartbreaking to have to put such a precious life to rest at such an early age. I, myself, don't have any info, but there are so many people on here that do. Once they read your post, someone will hopefully be able to point you in the right direction. Welcome to the forum! Glad you found us and I hope we can help you find a new baby to love.

Unfortunately, AKC, CKC, it really does not matter. AKC is preffered, but if there is bad breeding practices involved, paperwork can be easily falsified. I just found out a breeder I trusted was doing this, amongst other much worse things- and she is still selling puppies. If AKC did DNA testing on all the puppies that were produced, they would not make any money. But no- they do 'random' DNA tests, that is all. they require the sire to be DNA tested if he has more than 3 litters per year, but who says he is the father? Were they there? No.

When they do random DNA tests, if they find out the puppies are not from the sire/dam of the litter, they give them a slap on the wrist and revoke the papers from the litter. I found out this particular person had a litter from 3 different fathers. YEP. You heard it. She just sent everyone $500 and they all were happy, so in the end- noone complained- and she is still selling AKC pups. Would you not think that would be grounds for shutting her down?

The point is, you must find a reputable breeder. Someone who really cares about who they are selling their puppy to!!! Please, read our puppy buying tips here on English Bulldog News. Search the internet at least 20 pages deep for complaints. Check the BCA breeders referral list.

Also, if a breeder is on the first 5 pages of a google search for 'english bulldog breeder', (MOST of them) are importers, brokers or puppy mills. Stay away from them.

Adoption may be just what the doctor ordered to heal your broken heart as well, depending on where you are. Where do you live exactly?

Oh my goodness your story is just so awful. I am sorry for what you have lost and had to deal with. You say it wasnt poor breeding but definitely a poor breeder. A good one would have worked with you somehow. I agree with Desertsky, look at the bca listings she recommended. That is where the most well known breeders are and how I found my boy. Any pup can have problems for sure but getting from a good breeder makes the world of difference. Yes, where are you located, maybe someone can recommend someone to you specifically. I hope your search goes well and helps to heal your broken heart.

Welcome to the forum, everyone here is very helpful so don't be shy :) I am so very sorry for your lost. I can't imagine how heart breaking that would be. I would also suggest trying the BCA listings for breeders. Research any breeder before buying, lots of research. There are good breeders out there that truly care about the breed but there are also bad breeders that try to appear to be good breeders so thats really what you want to look out for. Adoption is definitely a really good option!!! No better feeling than giving a poor orphan bully his forever home :)
