Brand new, as in 2 day new, EB Mom. Advice?

Hello everyone,

Let me start this by saying I have had Pugs for over 20 years so flatfaced heat sensitive dogs I am used to. We brought home a new 8 week old English Bulldog puppy 2 days ago. So far things are going okay. The Pugs and Josephine the EB are checking each other out and testing the waters so to speak. I hope they become friends and play together once they are used to each other.

Our first night went pretty well only 1 potty call. Tonight our second night has been pretty rough she's been crying and barking and screaming every hour or 2. I've crate trained 5 Pugs over the years.... so what am I doing wrong that she needs? I want her happy, healthy and well adjusted. I currently have her crate in our bedroom across the room, should I move her to a different room? I don't want her to be scared should I put on a nightlight? I've been taking her out whenever she cries since the breeder said she would cry if she had to go potty. She's only 8 weeks old and I don't want to expect too much from her but I also don't want to set her up for issues by not starting out and doing this correctly right from the beginning.

Any suggestions you might have would be vastly appreciated.

First I LOVE her name!!! Welcome to you and Josephine! There are tons of long time, knowledgeable EB owners here, I am still relatively new but have 1.5 years under my belt and have learned a bunch here. That being said Joey was 8 weeks old when she came home too, on advice given to me (first time crate training too) I put the crate on floor close to my side of the bed, I also covered the top with a towel, not so much that air could not pass through, just enough so she felt protected. Our first 4 nights I took her out every 2 hours, she never went to the bathroom in her crate. After the those first 4 nights she figured out the routine, from there I would lengthen the time between overnight potty breaks, it will take a few weeks and less sleep for you but it works. FIGHT the urge to let her into your bed, this I followed exactly! Joey graduated to the bed after about 3 months (some would say that is too young but I was out of town and my sister started that....and well, she was just fine)

Always take her to the same spot to potty outside, give her lots and lots of praise (I gave treats only during the day after potty outside) Now......where are the photos of this little one?

Crate training can take a few nights, so be ready for some lost sleep... Lol We started our pups by taking them out twice a night, and then gradually doing once a night. Before you know it you can stop getting up at night... I don't sleep w/my dogs in the bed because of allergies, but they both sleep in our room. If you decided to let them sleep w/you in the bed I suggest waiting until they are fully potty trained.

You have received very good advice from [MENTION=14995]sisters3[/MENTION] and [MENTION=9157]ddnene[/MENTION]. I did cover the crate at night,except for the door,and had it next to my bed. If an only pup,they had a stuffed animal with them(when they were too little to chew it up) I did take them out about every 2 hours,and they usually would cry when they had to go. In between do not respond to the cries,as long as you know all is okay. Now they have their own bed,next to mine.
