Play biting

We just adopted a three year old English bull, his name is Vinnie. We are totally in love with him. But he thinks its OK to bite while playing. Not supper hard but not just an open mouth. I think he may have been a puppie mill baby and didn't learn that it hurts. Does any one have ideas on training for this? He has a big heart and he is super smart. But its not fun to be on the receiving end of a bit.

Thanks for the help, Candy

:welcome2: to EBN, and Thank YOU for adopting your baby!!! Play bitting is a BIG issue w/the bullies… I always try to redirect w/a toy or chew (NO rawhides) we use nylabones. If that doesn't work you can put them him in his crate for a "time-out" he will eventually realize that biting is NOT acceptable. I will tag some training experts, but just be consistent and he should come around. Good luck…

First, welcome to EBN.

Agree with Tracey above. If and when a bite occurs, make a loud ouch (if you don't already) or yelp. Then as Tracey said, redirect with a chewable toy.

Get a spray bottle fill it will water and when he starts to do this... spray the side of his face and give a firn 'NO'. the redirct to a toy usually works, but if not try the water bottle.
