Do puppy's poo or wee in there crate to get out?

Ok i know this may sound a little crazy, but we are quite sure our Hugo is purposefully doing his business to get out of his crate. He spends the best part of the day out of his crate, but there are a few little occasions were he has to go in his crate throughout the day, such as nipping to the shop or going to the toillet etc.

During these times he seems to do his business in his crate within minutes of being put in there. but he can sleep on the couch for hours!

is he doing it on purpose so we let him out while we have to clean his crate?

i let him outside between every 1 - 2 hours to go the toilet....

Would not be surprised... If he realized the door opens when 'x' happens, remember with dogs their life is about routines.
take out all blankets or beds till he is trained
