First off I am a new member and this is my first post!! Been creeping around the forum for a while and finally decided to register. So here is my question my bully Leo (pictures to come soon) is squatting and peeing even though he knows he isn't supposed to. He rarely has accidents in his crate and can sleep through the nite without any issue. It's almost like he doesn't want to do it but it just kinda happens. Usually I take him out and around 30 to 45 minutes later, depending on how much water he drinks, you can expect an accident. Taking him out every 30 mins seems a little much. He is 3 months old. Am I being unreasonable in expecting him to hold it for an hour or two? Any tips to stop this type of thing? I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor too so it's not like I can grab him and quickly get him outside to the grass where I want him to pee.
New here and bully peeing but I know he can hold it!

Welcome and congrats on your new baby!! He is just a pup!! At that age they will squat and go often. Its just a phase. Just remember to keep him on a schedule.

Welcome to the forum. Yes..your guy should be able to hold it for appx 3-4 hours. But....if they are NOT crated, they will go much more. They should go out every hour, AND IMMEDIATELY ..after eating/drinking and playing. If he needs to go every 45 minutes..take him!
You can always use my tether method..but honestly, I just think he has the general idea, but you aren't taking him out enough. He probably enjoys going out so he can't understand why you aren't taking him all the time!
Try every 30 minutes..slowly increase to 45.. Then to an hour. If he eats or drinks... Go immediately. If he plays..go immediately. If you crate him..take him out immediately before AND immediately after. If he can hold it all night..he still needs to go much more during the day..just like we do! :D

Three months old is still very young. I have also found that around 4 mos. they seem to regress and start going in the house more-sort of like a "teen age rebellion!" Most all my pups have had a stage like that. I run mine out about every 30 minutes at three months! Yes, especially if they have been playing,drinking alot, and as soon as they eat.

You have gotten really great advice already, from Becky and others above. My two guys weren't totally trained until 5 months old. We just used a very strict routine and schedule until they were trained. This is the schedule that worked for us.

For potty training, we just used a schedule, this is what we did and they were trained by the time they were 5 months old, and we've never had a accident in the house.

I've noticed a lot of new puppy owners have posted questions regarding potty training for their new babies. Since my 2 are now 9 months old, and I have been through this already, I thought I might share what worked for us. The puppy stage is very much like having a baby in the house, the training takes time and patience, and sleepless nights, but it is a temporary phase. The best thing that you can do to make potty training go smooth and without accidents is to first crate train your new baby, this will make your life much easier. Crate training your pup is not a cruel thing to do, they actually learn that the crate is a safe place. You can use it for sleeping, and for a safe place to put puppy in when you can't watch or supervise them, and for when you need to go out. The other important thing to do for successful puppy training is establishing a schedule. This worked the best for us, and our babies were fully trained by 5 months old. The schedule that worked for us was:
6 am: Take puppy out for their first pee and poop of the day
7 am: Feed puppy breakfast 1/3 of a cup kibble mixed with water.
Place puppy back in crate for 10 mins to let tummy settle after eating.
Then take puppy out for potty again.
7 am: From 7 am to 2 pm take your puppy out every hour or two throughout the day , and increase the
time by an hour each week , so they learn to hold.
2 pm: Feed puppy lunch 1/3 of a cup of kibble mixed with water.
Place puppy in crate for 10 mins to let tummy settle after eating.
Then take puppy out for potty again.
2 pm: From 2 pm to 8 pm, take your puppy out every hour or two during the day.
8 pm: Feed puppy dinner 1/3 of a cup of kibble mixed with water.
Place puppy back in crate of 10 mins to,let tummy settle after eating.
Then take puppy out again.
8 pm: From 8 pm to 11 pm , take your puppy out every hour or two, until around 11 pm or 11:30 pm.

months old. After they were 5 months old, we were able to eliminate the 2 am outing, and they were
able to hold for 4 or 5 hours at a time during the day.
I hope this helps any new puppy owner that has maybe never owned a pup before, and doesn't know how to train a puppy, or anyone who has a new puppy and is struggling to train them. At first it's like you are training when the puppies will go, but eventually they will tell you when they need to go out, they will either go to the door, or bark, or whine, my female Blossom will whine, when she wants out, my male Dozer will bark. Yep, what Vikinggirl and Jake said (who advised me a few weeks ago!) It's amazing how much these little pups have to go. I too experienced the same thing! We would take her out at her time, but then 30 mins later she would pee in the house! Driving me nuts!
I definitely recommend the indoor leash method. It keeps both human and dog attentive to her needs and keeps her out of trouble. I don't think we've had an accident since then because it keeps me more attentive to signals, and well, I'd like to think she doesnt want to pee right next to me! :D

Welcome to the site. You have been given great information by those above me. As a general rule pups can typically hold it for the number of months in age plus 1 so if your pup is 3 months old generally they can hold it for 4 hours but that is not always the case. My Harlea sleeps through the night with no accidents but during the day she wants to go out at times every 30 minutes or so. Some times to potty and most of the time to lounge in the grass. However, we don't take her out every single time as she needs to learn to hold it but we have learned the look on her face that says i got to pee and that is when we always let her out.
At what age does this general rule run out? After 5 months or 6 months or something like that?
I believe so but I am not positive. Most of the time Harlea sits by the door every 15 minutes because she loves to be outside butshe normally goes out every 2 to 4 hours now depending on how hard she plays inside and how much water she drinks.
OMG Leonides is soo cute! The pink bellies get me everytime
