Hello all,
First off, Wally has always been incredibly sweet and gentle and has never had any problems playing with all types of dogs. He is the same around children.
Lately though when we are walking him, he will occasionally lunge and snap at the bigger dogs (not all of them, just once in a while). It's pretty embarrassing and is not indicative of his personality at all. Could it be that he thinks he is protecting us? He plays with bigger dogs all the time off leash when at day care and has no issues. I'd like to find a way to stop this from happening or possibly even getting worse.
Any thoughts?
Thanks as always!

Sweet Wally? I have always been old dogs don't perceive size. That's why Chihuahuas act like they are Rottweilers..so it must be more than a size thing? He is neutered..right? I would want to correct that ASAP. That can certainly get out of hand. I'd kep him on a very very short lead..and try to anticipate his lunging. Correct immediately and strongly. He will sense if you are nervous so try to stay relaxed on your end. Image 2BullyMama can chime in..
Watch your dog's behavior PRIOR to the actual lunge. You will see when he/she is getting into that "mode" and disagree with that BEFORE the lunge occurs. Remember, you are in between your dog and the other dog, running this meeting! MOST IMPORTANT: VISUALIZE A SUCCESSFUL MEETING.
