ABOUT MAXIMUS

Maximus - aka Max is a 5 year old neutered male who weighs in at 72 pounds. He is house broken and crate trained. He is overall healthy but has eye issues, the beginning of dry eye in his right eye and prior surgery for cherry eye and entropion in his left eye. Which has left his vision a little impaired.
The surgery was done by a prior vet and was not done well. We had the surgery redone at our vet & the eye looks better but is not perfect. He will require 1 drop of Tacrolimus in each eye 2x a day for life. Max is resistant to any work being done on his eyes but if there is a cookie treat in his line of sight he tolerates the activity. He needs to be approached from his non surgical eye side — due to some vision impairment.

Max knows some obedience commands - he knows sit, down and heel - but needs practice. Max and his foster Mom spend hourly quality time where she sits with him to scratch him and play kissy face - however, he gets a little pushy and can knock you over if you are not paying attention - LOL.
He will do best in a home with NO other dogs or small children.

We DO not recommend games like tug-o-war, he is big and strong and we don't encourage this kind of behavior. Right now he has run of a mud room, he is loose in the foster home and crated when she is out of the house. He is respectful of the house, no boredom - room damage at all. He basically sleeps. He is on a 2x a day meal plan, but he needs company when he eats. Older children suggested, would prefer adults only though, just because of his sheer size.

His history is kind of sad, he was the companion to a gentleman, then the girlfriend became the wife and the a baby entered the scene. The owners did not do proper introductions, instead they separated Max and expected him to welcome the new arrival after he was in Max’s territory and demoted Max to 4th in line. In dog behavior — Max retaliates by becoming “jealous” of anything that is occupying his owner or fosters attention and he will act out. For example: chew his bed, go after any inanimate object that he feels is a threat to his attention — shovels, rakes, vacuum cleaners etc. So some distraction training is required, the Foster is working with him. This behavior can be tempered if the right person owns and works with Max.

Maximus is a smart boy who knows his basic commands. Can you be the right family for sweet Max?
