Default Miley Cyrus and the American condition

    Ok
    I wasn't gonna watch it.
    I really wasn't gonna.
I kept hearing about the shock and outrage an yada yada yada.
But i wasn't gonna watch it.
But then I realized that it's my solemn duty to observe and report my editorial to you, my loyal readers.
So I watched it on YouTube.
I watched the Miley Cyrus performance from the VMA's.

I gotta tell ya, folks; there is something so wrong about how predictable this whole thing was. I could've told you 5 years ago that the sweet little girl with the million dollar Disney smile would be riding a foam hand like a jockey on Clydesdale coming around the clubhouse turn. And how did I know that not only would Miley take the "Disney to skank" in 60 seconds routine like so many other pop stars I.e. spears, agulara, ect, but take it even further and faster than those who came before?
    Simple.
    What choice does she have?
We will get back to this in a second.

A problem i have with our culture here in the states is the glorification of empty and brainless dregs that we have learned to laugh at when we encounter them in our daily lives but in reality (or reality TV) have aloud them to take over a coveted spot in our culture.
    "What spot is that, Mike?"
    The role model.
These idiots are our kid's role models.
Well, your kids. I don't have any Kids but if I did than this would be troubling me more than just malcontent dislike for all things popular.
When we take an idiot like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian who are famous for nothing more than being rich and leaving the camcorder on while they bone other idiots and give them their own show a month later and put them out there for everyone to see, what we are really doing is telling everyone that this is what a star is. This behavior is acceptable. These are the "in crowd."

At this point I must disclaim that I am not for censorship. Also not republican or conservative or over christianized. In other words I am not affiliated with any group that wants to tell you what to (or what not to) watch or say or believe.
I'm just another armchair analyst who knows a bad condition when I see it.

Now, back to the subject at hand.

    Where was I?
    Oh yea
    Idiots
What bothers; really bothers me about the Miley thing is her target audience is kids and teens. I'm 31 years old and I don't know any grown ups who listen to Miley. I have friends and family in their 20's and they don't listen either and yet her song is #2 in the country so the kids must be all over this dribble.
She knows she's talking to kids in her records. You know it. I know it.
I was in punk bands from the age of 15 to 25 and our lyrical content read like a scene from 'Casino' so maybe this is gonna sound hypocritical but she is singing about drugs behaving like a stripper on stage so every time I see a young girl walking down the street in manhattan looking very much like a hooker I say to myself "Miley's fault"

Now, I know it's not Miley's fault. It's the American condition.
We glorify the Jersey shores and teen moms and rich talentless skanks and honey boo boos of the world and by doing so we numb the shame that people should feel when they behave like that.

I'm not saying "don't let your kids watch that stuff." I would let my kids watch it but only after I explained to them that these people on TV are false idols. Talentless hacks with nothing more working for them other than our morbid curiosity about them. We watch the jersey shore in my house. Pretty much for the same reason we watch hoarders and giants football. Because I hate them. Only once I'm sure my kids understand that Snooki and mama June may be funny but we should be laughing AT THEM. Not laughing WITH THEM. And no matter what the other kids at school say, these people are not what you wanna be. The only people who respect idiots are other idiots.

So imagine you are Miley Cyrus. Your getting older. You have very little talent. The last performance actually confirmed it. Can't sing. Can't dance. To old for Disney $. What to do? How do we stay in the spotlight?

    shock value.

Not in an artistic sudo-skank way like a lady gaga type shock value.

Just straight up stripper mode. That was her only play. Keep the people taking until we can get back in the studio and use an auto tune and numerous filters and effects to make my voice sound tolerable while I sing a song my producer wrote for someone else to sing but they just overdosed or got beat up by Chris Brown so now it's my song.

Absolutely spot on...sadly. My granddaughter...9 years old....really, really loved Hannah Montana. I have to admit, she always bugged me because I don't like her Dad..:/. But..it was very safe entertainment for my granddaughter. I hate to see her spiral downward..I only hope she lives at the end.

    @Kross225

I agree w/you... My daughter who is 12 used to watch Hannah Montana, but luckily for me she is a lot like me... a total TOMBOY!!! She hates everything girly, so she could really careless what Miley (or any of the other Disney disasters) are doing. But there are PLENTY more that do. Another thing that I would like to point out, is the parents... I can tell you right now that my daughter is monitored on what she watches at home, but I can't control every single thing that she is exposed to. We talk about what is considered in good taste, and what is not. Especially how girls should dress, and that includes the outfits I see some of these young girls wear. I can tell you her DADDY would never allow her to wear JUICY written across her butt or anywhere else for that matter... LOL It saddens me what is considered popular or newsworthy anymore...

This is so spot on ,
Most of the time i feel old! Im 27 (almost 28) and i wasn't brought up the way some women or girls similar age to me,its not only they way they dress its also they way of life, how they acting and speaking turns my guts -i feel like an odd ball when i hit the town! Or a local shop for that matter
What happened to the good tv, great music, and inspirational people -they all got replaced by wannabes and i still cant get my head around the fact that those people are famous for lack of brain .Maybe the way to go is following by the simple rule "the more clothes you take, the more idiotic or brainless you act the more famous you get
Atm my daughter is 6 she is a tomboy -an "army girl" like she likes to call herself , she watches cartoons and a lot of discovery and science channels -she loves them ,and i hope that she keep up with it x

I agree with everyone's comments above, these kids in show biz and in the limelight of TV, have no one who is looking after their best interests, and they are forced to grow up too fast, and most of the time pushed by their parents. Look at the Kardashians, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, McCauley Culken, Brittany Spears, the Olsen twins, etc, etc. they are in the spotlight from a young age, have way to much money and way to much control of it, they don't know what to do with all this fame and fortune, and they have more money than brains. Most of them pull away or in the case of McCauley Culkin, and Miley and a few others, they get emancipated from their parents at a young age, and get caught up in the Hollywood lifestyle, they have so much available money and all they can find to do with it is drink, party, do drugs, and sadly some end up dead at a young age. They are not being guided, and sadly our children do see these young kids as their role models, and want to emulate them. My kids are 31 and 33, and grew up in a different time, ( I'm glad they're not teenagers today). Whew, but my daughter did idolize and listen to the Backstret Boys, Madonna ( Miley reminds me of Madonna in her early years with some of her shock value videos), and Janet Jackson. But I think it was a lot milder back in the early 80's, and children didn't seem to grow up as fast, as they do now. There is also so much reality TV today compared to then as well, we watched more comedy, and sitcoms, not all these reality Tv's that are on now.

I am proud to say I have never seen one episode of jersey shore or honey boo or any of the other mindless reality shows. They get ratings...people watch..which spawns more shows. The dumbing down of America.

Default Miley Cyrus and the American condition

I completely agree... And I felt very old when I had to google twerking. I already said it to my older sons who thought it was downright skanky. I said "just think Sedona is going to fall into one if these someday... Her teen idol will become another one."

Time for a break... I don't see the Disney boys skanking themselves. If I missed it, please direct me.

A friend attended the funeral of her son's '30 something' friends who'd lost
their newborn within a day of birth. She reported that many of the women
were dressed as if to go clubbing~too much makeup, minis, low cut tops &
stilettos...all this while looking at a tiny white casket.

Sexy is not about nakedness, lack of modesty, shock value or immoral behavior.

Self respect, dignity, womanliness, self awareness, mystery & confidence create
sexiness and of course pride...a proud woman will not cheapen herself and knows,
    she'll never have to.
