signs of hip dysplasia

My bully is just over 16 months old and the last few days we have noticed him limping and I'm wondering if this could be a sign of hip dysplasia. I read HD usually appears or causes problems earlier in the dogs life. Could a sudden limp at 16 months old be HD ? Or does this just sound like a sprain/fracture ?

If anyone has any knowledge or advice here I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.

I think this is a case where the Vet would be your best consultant once you eliminate the obvious like cut pad or sores on the feet. Maybe someone else has a clue. Good luck with it.

After owning 15 bulldogs in my life I feel that I have some experience with HD. My vet tells me more then 50% of Bulldogs have HD but it rarely ever bothers them because their weight is in the front. However my experience has been most bulldogs without HD will start limping from time to time for some unknown reason for a few days and then it will go away just as quick. Why? I have no idea.... I don't get overly concerned until it goes for more then a few days then I would take them to the vet, but out of my 15 bulldogs I never once had to take them to the vet for limping and yet they have all had spells where they limp..... Just another bulldog quirk in my opinion

I agree, it's probably not hip dysplasia - it could be anything from a strained muscle, to a sore on the pad - so it's most likely something more minor.

That said, I've had one puppy with severe hip dysplasia and one dog with two torn ACLs so I've got some experience with this. Here is an article I wrote on hip dysplasia that will give you some information and perhaps help you determine if it is a hip issue but the only real way to get a diagnosis is to go to the orthopedic specialist and get an x-ray.

I recommend waiting a couple days and keeping activity to a minimum to see if it clears up on its own. If not, time to see the doctors.

It could be something lodged between his toes like cheet grass or pea gravel.

BabyGirl had developed a severe limp. Vet took XRays and saw it was arthritis. She was on meds but I put her on a diet. Now that she's lost weight all she gets is a joint supplement, but no more limp...knock on wood. She is 2yrs-8mos old.

Well false alarm thank God

I think he just pulled/strained something really bad as there has been no limping since the week I made the initial post.

I heard one way to test for hip dysplasia is to lift your dogs front set of paws up and hold them(like your dancing) and if your dog can walk with u, without distress, his hips are fine.

I also heard that if your dog does in fact have hip dysplasia that corrective surgeries are the equivalent of flushing your $$$ down the toilet.

It is a sad ailment with no cure.

I'm glad to hear everything is okay but this is totally not true...I have a spitfire of a 1.5 year old bulldog that had severe hip dysplasia that can run faster than me to prove it. It is a very serious issue but modern veterinary medicine has made great strides in treating this condition. Truman is living proof.

im so glad your bully is doing ok. sarah had a limp for a few days before but it cleared up on its own. thats so great
