Scarlet aka JAWS

Hello Everyone,

I have a few ? for you. How long does teething last. Scarlet is now 12 weeks and she has 2 basic modes sleeping and biting everything.

She is a lot better when it comes to feet but i have more nips from her razor sharp teeth. you can only give her kisses when she is half asleep and even then she will sucker you in and go for the kill on the nose lol.

The one problem I am having is she loves to play splash in the water bowl. she will start to drink from it and them jump in it. She loves to play in the water be it her bowl the tub etc. I cant fill the tub more than a few inches or else she tries to go underwater swimming.

LOL....too cute about the jumping in the water bowl. I am not sure how long teething lasts but Brodie is 6 months old and still teething. You just have to be firm with her about no biting and train her to stop otherwise it will continue on and get worse as she gets older because then it is a game. I recommend using coins in a can. It worked WONDERS for Brodie!!! When he acts up now all I have to say is you want me to get my can and stops what he is doing and lays down. LOL and I only had to shake it a few times now I just threaten to use it.

Actually, I read that they can teethe up to a year. However, she is most likely not trying to teethe on YOU (stuff maybe). With you, it is a game. If there isn't another dog around she plays with, she wants to play with you and that is how they learn to play...with their mouths. You have to correct her EVERY time and so does everyone in the house. She will get past this so never fear. Just be consistent. What I did with Gator and still do with Gypsy is every time he would put his mouth on me, I would make a horrible, loud noise and push him (gently) away from me and ignore him for a bit. He stopped within a day or two, at least with me. My husband took longer to get him to stop because he just wasn't consistent enough.

Sorry no help here either. I got Stig when he was 5 months and he only had 1 baby tooth left. I have to share that when it fell off it scared my bf and I to bits because we didn't know that they actually lose them like us (we were brand new dog owners ). But I remember that he didn't have a biting problem like you described so maybe Scarlet will be the same.

Oh, and very cute visual about the water bowl. =). I say she'll also outgrow it, but for now maybe train her with treats on hand.

Bear is 15 months and his chewing/biting has curbed a bit. I had to watch him like a hawk. I had to give him stern NOs and shun him, that is the only thing that worked for us. As for the water bowl, my bully doesn't necessarily like to get in it but he does dunk his head and water gets in his nose so that is an ordeal. I have a slow feeder bowl that I started to put water in after he was done eating and he does much better.

I'm still dealing with it too. Rufus Hambone is 7 months now and he averages 3 frenzies a day. When he gets in the frenzy he will bark, dart around, and chew anything! he reminds me of one of the infected from the movie '28 Days Later'.

I have found that the absolute best way to deal with this is, the instant he gets the frenzy I must get a bowl of ice. About 20 pieces of moon cubes from freezer. My freezer's ice looks like crescent moon shape. Anyway, he will amazingly sit quietly and chew them one at a time and they calm him down immediately. He never ever chews me unless he is teething frenzy. I used to worry about the chewing, but I have learned it's definitely the teeth bothering him. The quicker I get the ice, the quicker he will get relief and not bite. Give it a shot. + it's a bonding experience feeding him the 1 cube moon at a time. The dog knows you're helping and they appreciate it. Hambone stares at me when he's chomping them and I swear he's thinking "Thanx Daddy!".

@Spinal Remains That sounds like a great idea with the ice. I will give that a try tonight. Our ice make make the same 1/2 moon shape.

@BruceP I am glad you got a laugh from it. We had to get a mini carpet cleaner to suck up the water after her swimming lessons.

We have 2 other dogs so we can't pick up the water bowl. But that area of carpet is sure clean.

I can't remember when Lucy stopped chewing us and can't say I miss those little razors
Try to distract her and replace everything she shouldn't have with a toy.

I second the coins in a can! Works for us, but only up to a point. Just like [MENTION=2487]Spinal Remains[/MENTION], we get a few frenzies a day. Lola is 4 1/2 months old, and has lost all her "razor teeth", so at least it hurts less now. I will have to try the ice trick. We just put her in her pen (like a baby play pen) in another room until she calms down a bit. She learned to jump up on the couch last weekend, so now she runs all over everyone. It's painful!

My dog is 11 weeks and she drew blood at 9 weeks. I got her at 8 weeks so I didnt want to reprimand her and scare her since she was just getting adapted to her new surroundings. If you read a lot of training manuals, the book states to train as soon as they come home (8 weeks), but I waited til things settled down and she started to get comfortable. That was @ 9 weeks old. So she bit me and I said NO and gave her a time out for 15 min in her kennel. I didnt play with her and just ignored her for 15 min. She loves to be around me so she learned quickly that biting me equals time out equals no me for 15 min. She learned real fast not to bite me. Hope this helps!

It's unbelievable how much the English Bulldog wants to be around their human family isn't it.
I've had Newfoundlands, black Labs, Pitt Bulls, Bisengi, and now an English Bully. The Bulldog is an unbelievable lovable animal. The most lovable I have encountered anyway. Hambone needs to be near me at all times.

Putting puppy in time out when they act out or do something bad is a sure fire way to promote the proper behavior. They love us so much that they will avoid time out. I don;t care what scientists or animal behavior specialists say. Dogs love their owners and it goes beyond wanting to please them. The English Bulldog is proof.
