    We use vaccum cleaners with paper bags (dustbag) so that might be part of the problem. Our new one is a Nilfisk VP930, and it's constructed in a different way than most vaccum cleaners so hopefully it will not start smelling. Nilfisk is a Danish company and they are very popular in workplaces since they are sturdy and very efficient (and I just checked... they are sold in SA too!).

    My Abby attacks my little handheld vac, and when I turn it off, her mouth is vibrating like crazy.
