Hello: my 3 yo. English bulldog seems to have a hotspot on his tail on the outside. He's been scooting on his bum and trying to bite at it for at least a week. We took him to the Vet BC we didn't know where there was these reddish brown spots coming from on his blanket on the couch. We didn't know if it was internal and his anal glands or what. We had him checked out by the vet and they said it was a hotspot. This is the first hot spot on our baby and I don't know how else to fix it or take care of at home. The vet said to keep it dry and prescribed some antibiotics. Is there anything else I can do for him? He has been on a raw diet for about 2 months now and seems to be doing well. His coat is not the best looking right now but I attribute that to our harsh Boston winters and the seasonal shedding of his coat. Whatever advice you have would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all!! [emoji4]

When Castor had a hotspot, the vet shaved the area and prescribed chlorehexidine shampoo (wash daily: leave on for ten minutes and then rinse). No antibiotics prescribed here. It took less than a week to heal and then some time for the fur to grow. It was a rather nasty thing on his neck and it just came out of nowhere.

cefe13 said it all. I don’t see why you need to give antibiotics. Hotspots simply can happen. Just need to keep it clean n dry.

Thanks so much all!!! I love the bulldog community...so many loving, caring and wise members! As you can imagine the vet I take my babies to does not have any EB specialist unfortunately. The antibiotics concerned me for sure. We have that type of medicated shampoo at home-chlorexadine so we will try that for sure. The vet is where we take the pups for daycare too and they do love on them and take very good care of them. Our EB doctor is a little far from us so we take them to th vet close to our home for non-serious issues. Thanks again!!! [emoji173]

I personally wouldn’t give the antibiotics buts that’s me.... If you still decide to give it anyway, don’t forget daily probiotics with meals.

Shave the area too... it help dry it out and prevent dirt from getting stuck in it.

Add a probiotic to his food, if doing raw— go with refrigerated sauerkraut or raw goats milk

Thank you guys for all of your help. A little update: the vet prescribed antibiotics BC they felt it looked infected. We did clean last night with wipes that have chlorexadine in it. I will be adding the pro biotics/sauerkraut to his food today. The area on his tail has been clipped and shaved by the vet....i am hoping this clear ups soon!
