Helping a puppy settle at night?

Big Tino wakes up without fail at 2:30/3:00AM every morning. He’s only 13 weeks old and is letting us know he needs the toilet which is great. He sometimes takes a little while to settle though after. Does anyone have any helpful tips? Also at what age roughly do they stop needing the toilet during the night?

Oh I remember those times very clearly, Joey is almost 3 y/o now but those nights are clear in my mind.

Is Tino in a crate or your bed? If in a crate, where is the crate?

Moose is 20 weeks old, so we experienced what you are experiencing not too long ago. Because it was still very cold and he wasn't fully vaccinated we used training pads for the first two weeks. In our mind it was important for him to be comfortable in his new surroundings. First 4 nights Moose cried and made all sorts of noise at night. As hard is it may be, we didn't give in. We kept him in a separate room right next to our bedroom. He'd cry for about 30-45 minutes then go back to sleep and wake up again in a few hours. As far as not needing the toilet at night, Moose has stopped. We take him out at night at 10pm and he is good until 7am. Just be consistent in your training and don't give in. As [MENTION=14995]sisters3[/MENTION] asked, are you crating him? How big is the crate? Is he sleeping in your room?

He’s in a medium sized crate and we’ve got it in our hall underneath the stairs.

Have you tried the crate next to your bed? Where you can verbally reassure BABY Tino that you're right there and all is OK? Also try covering the back 2/3 of the crate with a cover, this helps the pup feel safe and not out in the open and might help him relax more.

Joey only spent the first week in her crate (overnight), next to my bed, after she started sleeping through the night, which started around 14 weeks (pretty young) she started sleeping on the bed. If she would begin to stir overnight I would get up and take her out.

I was sleep deprived for almost a month but I expected that, BUT it really paid off in the end.

To me there are absolutely WRONG ways to do this but really no 100% RIGHT way, it's just what has worked consistently, so I'm sure different members will be along with what worked for them. You'll find what best fits you and Tino. I should say that I have the pleasure from working at home 90% of the time so that made a HUGE difference in what worked for Joey.

It is GREAT that he is telling you he has to go out, really great! As far as getting Tino to settle down faster when you come back to bed like I said maybe crate next to your bed OR if it is an option, down the road when you're sure he is "holding it' overnight perhaps on your bed, that is when Joey really started to settle in for a long overnight sleep. But again, this is just what worked for us.

I don't understand why someone wants a pup, then sticks him out in another room, or in the hallway like a troll. They are babies and want their "family".

We took Castor out during the night for several months after he was pottytrained - not sure that was needed though. To make a little pup settle, treat him like the baby he is! Sing him a lullaby, carry him or hold him in your arms, etc. I don’t think dogs are like humans but I am convinced their socialisation depends on their being treated with love and that they do much better being included than being separated. I would never try to make a pup or a child for that matter fall asleep alone unless they want that. Good luck with little Big Tino!

Bulldogs are Velcro-dogs and want always be with their humans..... bring the crate in the room so he knows you are there and also give a dirty t-shirt he can have to keep you scent with him
