Bella
Hey everyone my name is Brad and I am new to the site. I joined after getting tired of googling any and all questions I have about the bulldog breed.

A brief intro to my beautiful pup. Her name is Bella and she is 2 years old. Obviously like we all know she's a sweetheart and a lover. She is the sweetest cutest pup around and I love her to death. IMG_1918.JPG

Which brings me to my main question and the point of much anxiety today.
She recently underwent entropion surgery in both eyes and I am very happy that she isn't going to have constant discomfort anymore but I am now worried her eyes will never look the same. I am probably over reacting and just generally unsure but can someone please help me out? The surgery was yesterday morning and I was wondering if the redness pictured under her eyes is from swelling or if that will be how she will look from now on? Snapchat-146257681.jpg She also is not interested in water or food at all and so I am going to give her a little more time for the drugs to fully wear off this morning before I start to worry. If she still isn't drinking or eating after 24 hours I will be pretty concerned considering she normally wants to eat anytime anywhere like most bulldogs haha.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated! I am glad to be here and excited to share and learn information from everyone.

:welcome2: to EBN!!! Please don't be too concerned how her eyes look 24 hrs after surgery... redness and swelling is normal. Those areas will return to normal as part of her recovery. Make sure to be vigilant that she doesn't rub her eyes on anything, and add any drops or meds as prescribed. Not eating is extremely normal as well... I would offer her ice chips so she doesn't get dehydrated, but she will eat when she feels better. I would also offer her small amounts so she doesn't get too sick at her stomach.

I have no advice on this, just wanted to welcome you to the forum. Bella is adorable.

I do agree that not drinking/eating right after surgery is normal.

Thank you so much!!! I am trying to get her to try some food and have been holding ice cubes for her to lick at. I will try and crush the ice up for her and see how she takes to that. The hardest part is getting her to relax with the cone on. I was up all night fortifying the house so she couldnt find a corner to rub against and to keep her from rolling around on the cone trying to scratch her face. The redness scares me because it looks so exposed but I am glad it should retreat back during recovery. Thanks again for the info and I am glad to be here where I can share my sweet pup and maybe help someone else out one day.

We've done a lot of entropion eye surgeries over the years and you need to measure recovery by weeks not days. Those eyes look normal for 1-3 days out of surgery. As already mentioned, be diligent with giving drops. I hope your Vet gave you some to administer...they should have.
Food and water intake will return in time. YES, if no water intake after 24 hours, notify your Vet and they may opt to give a bag of fluid until Bella's stomach settles. In the mean time you might try chicken broth or kibble with broth to entice.
In time, all will be better than new!

Just adding to what's been said, give recovery a few weeks - her eyes will go back to normal looking :)

Ice chips are great, also to get her to eat at least something, try some boiled chicken, egg & rice... she'll likely eat that right up, at least to get something in her belly until she gets her appetite back. Sweet girl - I love her little face. Swollen eyes and all. Bravobrad950

Thank you so much for the info!!! They didn't send me home with drops but I always have some on hand. Are there certain ones to use or will any drops work? They told me to keep dabbing her eyes to keep the gunk out and gave me antibacterial and pain meds. She finally ate and drank a little today so all is well in that front. Our 2 yr old Bunny had this done on both eyes about 7 months ago and the redness will go away. Give it up to 2 wks. Here's how she looks now, 7 months later. Hope this helps!

We always use steroidal drops or ointment for a couple of days post op. It really helps with the swelling. Over the counter GenTeal Drops or Ointment will help.
Our eye specialist always sends us home with this...

Never use steroidal meds if treating an ulcer.

hi and welcome and oh boy your right she is a cutie!! really pretty bulldog! And, we recently had the surgery you speak of but at the same time, had soft palate and nares soooooooooooo, just speaking of the entropian, yep, I wasn't fond of the look right away, but will look great soon... even when you think looks all better, it even gets better :) I thought it odd that we were not told to use the cone and absolutely didn't need it. I had bought one because I thought they were wrong, but they wernt.. He did great and had stitches in eyes and nose and still was fine! .. Not suggesting that by any means, I'm just throwing this out there. Also, we got a tube of stuff to put across his eyes and that was easier than I thought it would be... Hope you get something as it seems real important...
