Take a breath.

The value of the dog is in your head--not in the dog
breed. That's not to be antagonistic, so if you're
taking it antagonistically, you're not understanding
my intent. My intent is to make you stop, tilt your
head sideways like dogs do, and say to yourself,
"Hmm, I don't think I ever thought of that or saw
it that way."
We have a filter that puts an "I
really, really, really want a bulldog"
filter on
everything and every dog we look at, and since
we don't have the dog and some breeder does,
boom, the breeder ups his fee and many of us
pay it, thinking it's all in the breed.

In the world, some bulldogs are sold for next-to-
nothing, or in the case of shelter adoptions,
bulldogs are occasionally taken with no money
being exchanged--the value is in your head, not in
the breed. The breeder wants you to believe
otherwise. I'll let you chew on that for a while.

IMHO, yes, it's a lot of money for any dog.

We put lots of money into the acquisition, and it
almost never seem to look at the human-dog
relationship and its training. We go into the
relationship assuming that the relationship will be
robust and problem-free. That tells me that in the
initial assumption the training has zero value, and
it's simply all about acquiring the dog. I'm waving
my arms and saying, "Hey! Look here! This does
make sense, and I almost guarantee it's something
you never stopped to look at nor consider."
Old
School
doesn't care about being a strong leader.
New School considers that.

In fact, I tell my clients:

  • Get "trained" before you get "dogged," or
  • Get yourself some training before you go getting your dog.
If you get your dog and then get training, you'll
always be behind the eight ball as you try to build
that leadership boat as you're building it. That's hard
to do, and it's not fair to the dog. Be the best leader
you can--get yourself trained first, before you get
your dog. If that sounds odd, it's because the old,
Old School human culture doesn't understand its
value and doesn't care as much about how to be a
strong leader. New School cares. I care. I want
you to be your dog's

  • calm,
  • strong,
  • patient,
  • assertive, and
  • non-aggressive (CSPAN)
leader for your dog right now--before you get him.
When you go into the relationship being aware of
and having The Magic Five above, you will

  • trigger your dog's calm submission, you'll
  • always have a calm, submissive dog,
and you always want that, regardless of the breed.
You can quote me on that.

In totaling up the purchase price of a dog, include
some money you squirrel aside to get yourself
some training before you get your dog. Put money
into acquiring your charge, then be sure to put a
portion of that money into training for yourself (and
ultimately for you dog, but really it's really about
you).

That training, and that money you put into your
training, will be something that will be used for
the rest of you and your dog's life. You'll never
regret it.

This morning I was all excited to post to you guys that there was a new craigslist ad up for Dozer. Stacy, his owner, changed the price to $1400 with breeding rights and $1000 without breeding rights. I was psyched because we don't plan on breeding. But this morning it's gone lol...maybe she changed her mind? Or someone came to get him last night? We are supposed to meet Dozer today <3 I hope. If no one bought him suddenly last night. I can't say I'd be too surprised, I mean we are dragging our heals, but this is why: We rent a house right now but it's far from husband's work (about an hour in traffic). So we decided it was too far and have an apartment reserved that is much closer to his work. We LOVE our house. It's hard to leave. So my husband is having 2nd thoughts on leaving. He needs to know by Monday night because I have to drop the first rent check off on Tues. SO I'm waiting to see what his decision will be before I buy Dozer. I'm not sure the apt will be big enough for all of us + Doze. I know someone could come along and buy him in the meantime, but that is the chance I have to take.

BTW we are meeting Dozer today for the first time! I'm excited :)

I was thinking about you this a.m…and today being the big day!! I'm a little curious, if you had an appt. to meet w/Dozer, why would his owner change the CL ad (which I'm always very leery about, but did read what you wrote about that on a previous post)…?
My personal opinion is that no-one should buy a bulldog from craigslist w/an intent to breed period, exclamation point! There are so many health related issues with these breeds and finding a good breeder is key to having a healthy/successful bulldog experience…even then, there are no guarantees, but the breeder is a HUGE part of this process…Have you looked into Stacy's credentials? Where she got Dozer? Maybe her post got flagged and that is why it is now down...

I'm super excited for you, I am also just being slightly protective and hoping you have a giant list of questions to bring w/you today…because once you see that adorable, wrinkle-faced baby…it's probably done, lol...

AS far as the apt. space, you really don't need a ton of space for this kind of breed…they need very little for exercise; two short walks a day, frequent trips out in the yard…they sleep a lot, they're not crazy active (most of the time, lol, I play this one song and Bass is a firecracker;) So as long as you have room for a crate, a decent space outside for "bathroom breaks"…you should be fine for space!!

thanks for being protective! that is so sweet :) Thanks for the upvote for the apt! It's a 2 bedroom. 1100 sq ft. We would be in the master bedroom, my son in the other bedroom. My husband's brother lives with us and he has to sleep on the couch because he snores and it upsets my son (who has William's Syndrome). So that kind of complicates things as far as space. It's not the ideal situation and we could've got a 3 bedroom but the price and location of this apt is ideal, so...

anyway, Stacy is the breeder, I probably havent been clear about that. I've asked her a lot of questions already, on the phone and through text. She says she doesn't breed her dogs constantly, that she gives them time off between litters. I believe she also said that she only breeds them a couple of times and then they're done. I'm not sure, I'll have to ask again. They are inside dogs, well loved. I have a good feeling from her. And I'll see what vibe I get today. She is there for you pretty much 24/7, to help out when you have ANY questions after purchasing a dog.

Thanks for thinking of me

Reassuring :heartsign:

On a side note….if snoring is an issue, you may have to keep Dozer and your son on opposite sides of the apartment :sarcastic: Not sure why, but the snoring from my bully is so much cuter than from my hubby

Well, good luck today, I'm excited for you, make sure you update!!
