Default We said goodbye to Curly's best friend last week

Sorry it's been a bit since I last posted. Been traveling for work again.

All is good with Jawnie - he just got out of his cast last week and will be in rehab for about 5 weeks. I'm moving to Philly in Mid May to stay on track with our re-integrating plan.

But back to the subject of the post. Our dear cat, Mongo, crossed the rainbow bridge last week. Curly and Mongo were really great friends and often where you would find Mongo, you would soon find Curly or vice versa.

We found out that he was sick about the time Curly had it in with Jawnie. He likely had cancer but since he was a 16 year old cat we thought that whatever it was we would let run its course. We didn't realize that it would be a fast course and he would leave us in about 3 weeks after we took him to the vet.

The strange thing is Jawnie didn't know how to react around mongo - sometimes chased him, try to playfully bit his tail. I'm half wondering if this added to Curly's unexpected lashing out at Jawnie. ie Curly was trying to protect his sick friend.

    I digress.

I was away on business when Mongo passed away but I did FaceTime with him the morning that he left us. I love technology for that simple reason. I got to say goodbye.

My husband had an appointment to put him down last Wednesday evening but by the time my hubby returned home Mongo had crossed the bridge. He didn't exhibit signs of pain or suffering beforehand for us to take him earlier. It was just his time.

Curly acted very strange leading up to the days when mongo passed. He would follow him everywhere - I mean everywhere. Lay next to him and lick him until he was soaked. When Mongo left "concerned Curly" went back to normal happy go lucky curly again - it was like he knew and said his goodbyes.

One extremely cool bully thing about Mongo. At some point a few years ago we needed to get X-rays on him because he had some kidney stones. This was right after curly joined our family. When the vet came back she said that Mongo had two infused vertebrae which she had never seen a cat with it before (one that wasn't in some type of trauma that is - my husband had Mongo since 7wks) but said it was commonly seen in Bulldogs. She said that mongo probably secretly wanted to be a bulldog so maybe that is why curly liked him so much.

RIP Mongo Pongo Pudding and Pie, Curlys best cat friend ever.

So very sorry for the loss of Mongo.... 16 years is amazing

Happy to hear Jawnie is doing well... Good luck.

And I would think it is possible Mongo being sick played a role in Curley behavior change... Talk to your trainer about it

@nubonics I am really sorry to hear about Mongo. I personally think that Curley knew, and that is why he stuck with him. He was there for his bud. It turned out for the better, that you did not have to put him down. He knew he was ready. It is difficult to lose them, no matter how many times you have been in that position.

I'm SO sorry to hear about Mongo… 16 years is a long life. I had a similar experience w/my Midi, he was very old and sick and we had scheduled to have him put to sleep. He died the night before, and in a way it was a blessing because he was 18 years old and the thought of putting him down just about killed me.

LOVE all the pics of Curly and Mongo… I hope he's not too sad w/out his best buddy

I am glad that we didn't have to choose to put Mongo down and he crossed over by himself. In the past with other beloved pets, I've always had slight guilt "did I do the right thing? Was it really time"

I also think for Curly seeing mongo go allowed him to understand that he passed away, rather than "disappearing"
