Dozer just finished the Earthborn Hollistic Coastal bag, but his allergy symptoms aren't improving. He was on Fromms Beef Frittata for two years, then developed allergies to it, so I put him on Fromms Lamb and Lentil, and he did well on this for 9 months before developing allergies again. Blossom still gets Fromms Lamb and Lentil and she is doing well on this food, so I will continue with it for her. I did a detox from all proteins with Dozer, and put him on Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Vegan kibble for one month, he did very well with this, but lost weight due to having no protein. I then put him on a Novel protein, hoping his immune system wouldn't recognize the protein and he would tolerate it. I put him on Natutal Balance Limited Ingredient Kangaroo, but he was allergic to that as well, so tried rabbit, but he reacted the worst to that protein. I then put him on the Earthborn Hollistic Coastal, hoping that he would tolerate white fish, but he has scratched his chest raw again and his eyes are goopy again. I ordered the Honest Kitchen dehydrated food that you mix with your own proteins, and I am picking it up tonight and will start Dozer on it. If this does not work out for him, then my last two choices are to go back to the Natural Balance Vegan kibble and keep him a vegan, and add proteins like eggs, kidney beans, and lentils, or I'll have to home cook for him. I used to home cook for both of them when I first got them, but then went to Fromm's. They did well on the home cooked proteins, but at that time they hadn't shown any signs of having allergies, the allergies developed over time. I don't know if it's just the proteins he's allergic to, or weather it's the preservatives or other additives in the dog foods that are causing these reactions, but I'm hoping that by me adding home cooked protein to the Honest Kitchen food mix, he will tolerate it, otherwise I'm going to have to go back to the Vegan kibble and add non meat proteins. I have never heard of a dog being a vegetarian, and hope that if he has to eat this way, he will get sufficient protein and nutrients. I just want him to be free of allergy symptoms and to be healthy.

My guys were developing what I diagnosed as seasonal allergies to their Pork and Peas (Fromms.) Here is what I did that made a huge difference. I started adding a tablespoon of the plain greek yogurt (chiobani is what I use, but I know there are cheaper alternatives) and a small teaspoon of organic coconut oil to their food at night. Almost instantly helped.

That's what I used to. But since I put Brett on Fromm Lamb and Lentils his tear stains got really bad. Hopefully this new flavor would help

So, I picked up Dozers new Food. It's called Honest Kitchen, and it's dehydrated so it looks like dried greens, and it smells like rabbit food lol. I guess it must be from the kelp in it. You add 1 cup of warm water to 1 cup of the mix and let it sit for a few minutes, and then you add your own protein. Tonight is his first meal on the new food, and I bought ground turkey and sautéed it with water and mixed it in. I made enough for 4 meals, so there will be enough until Sunday morning, and then I'll cook up a new batch. I added his yogurt as a topper, he licked the bowl clean ( I think he licked the shine off the bowl ). He loved it, so I really hope this will work for him. The box makes enough food for 14 days, but if he does well on it, I'll buy the bigger box, that will last for a month. It has a lot of good natural ingredients and is made from human grade ingredients.

i mixed the dry mix with warm water, then let it sit, then I sautéed the ground chicken in water, and then topped his food with plain yogurt.

Here is a picture of the box, and a list of the ingredients in the dry mix.

What is the new flavor?

Speaking of Fromm...I sent them a letter to see if Fromm produces a low-fat dry food as my Jewel is on a low-fat diet secondary to pancreatitis. My email was answered the same day much to my surprise. I love it because that is customer service (customer services is a lost art but that is topic for another time). Fromm's response:

Roger,
Thank you for your email and choosing Fromm Family Foods. We are sorry to hear of the issues Jewel is having with pancreatitis.

Please keep in mind that all of our recipes are designed for the average healthy pet in mind. That said, some pets with medical conditions do extremely well on our recipes, while others may not. Since we are not a prescription food, we do not make a gastro-intestinal diet or anything that is considered as an alternative.

However, our recipe with the lowest fat is Gold Weight Management. I would advise that your vet review the TECHNICAL ANALYSIS for this recipe and see if it will work for your dog. Unfortunately we may need to keep your dog on a prescription diet for a few months until the system returns to normal. Keep in mind that pancreatitis is very hard on the system and it needs something as simple as possible to get it back to normal function.

Here is the link to the recipe : Fromm Gold Life-stage and Lifestyle Dry Recipes - Fromm Family Foods

Other low fat recipes that we offer: Gold Coast Weight Management (grain free, chicken free), Whitefish & Potato, Classic Mature, and Reduced Activity & Senior Gold. I HIGHLY recommend consulting your vet about a different recipe if you are exploring other options. I personally work at a veterinary clinic and have experienced this with my dog as well, so I understand it is not easy. This being said, and as I said previously, the prescription diet may be the only food that is low enough in fat for your dog at this point.

We do not offer any recipes lower than 10% crude fat.

Additionally I would not recommend any canned recipe unless your veterinarian gives the approval. While canned recipes can seem low in fat, when we look at the Dry-Matter basis (the raw value) of fat and protein they are pretty high. If you did want to discuss with your vet, we may be able to consider the Shredded Chicken Entree as it is about 10% dry-matter basis fat percentage.

Let me know if you have any additional questions, I am more than happy to help. I wish you the best of luck in getting your dog back to a healthy state.

Warm Regards,

I am very impressed by their quick reply. Nonetheless, we give Bentley Fromm's food and they make a low fat treat that we give to both Bentley and Jewel because the crude fat is at 5% for the treats.

I know that it is a penny for one's thoughts, but I just wanted to put my two cents worth in.

Have a Great Day/Evening/Night Forum.

@rjisaterp new flavor is Hasen Duckenpfeffer. It's a grain-free, rabbit and duck entree made w/potatoes, carrots, lentils, chickpeas and celery. Crude protein is listed at 28 and crude fat at 17.

What a detailed and caring response letter! I'm super impressed. I also e-mailed Fromm once and got an an answer almost immediately…yes, I agree, quality customer service can be hard to get now a days…but not with this company! @Vikinggirl I think @TyTysmom feeds Honest kitchen too.

Yep, we feed Honest Kitchen too and love it. We've done both the bases (Preference & Kindly) Tyson loves both. We use lean ground beef or ground kangaroo as protein :)
