    Default Nose surgery (Palate surgery?)

Anyone have this done on their dogs? Our 8 month old female sounds like she has a terrible time breathing and I would like look into this type of surgery. Anyone from PHX have it and have a vet they would recommend for this?

I have had this done to 3 of my babies ...... Nitshcke was 2 years old, Cheli was 8 months old and Lambeau was 16 weeks. Nitshcke had a lot of work done (palate, nares, saccules) he recovered well and had a great life. Cheli is doing great, again recovery went well, but he only had the palate and nares done -- he still has some apnea, but over all he does much better than before the procedure. Lambeau, is no 10 months old and since doing just the nares at 16 weeks, he has no issue breathing, he doesn't even snore

A little over a year ago, our Frank got overexcited, aspirated and nearly died. He had the surgery on his palate, widened his nares (nostrils), and trimmed saccules on his airway while he was intubated and under anesthesia. He luckily recovered and he breathes much better now. Unfortunately, we were in Iowa at the time, so I cannot recommend a vet in Phoenix. But I am very happy that we had the surgery done. I think it will help prevent what happened last year and he has such an easier time breathing now.

Castor went through that surgery last year and it was very successful. When choosing a vet, make sure you go for a place where they can keep her over night and that they have experience of this kind of surgery!

Just to add make sure that there is someone at the vets to stay with them overnight. A lot of vets don't have that facility and some say they watch them by camera.... not good enough!

Radar had his nares widened and palate shortened in his first surgery - he still snores some and has a little sleep apnea but overall he breathes so much better. I agree make sure someone is there over night with her.

I never had this type of surgery done but Arizona Vet Specialists in Gilbert, AZ were excellent through two ACLs and two hip surgeries - plus they have experts in every field so I am sure you'll be able to find someone who has done this type of surgery many, many times.

Good point - I didn't know that. So yes, of course a place where they watch the dog closely! They shaved Castor's throat/chest before the surgery as one possible post-op complication is swelling - if that happens, they need to perform tracheostomy.
