Radar had his 4th surgery on Tuesday and they put the plate in to fuse his knee all calls this week have been positive until 30 2 45 minutes ago the doc called said he has managed to break a screw and our next step is to take his leg. What do I do? Will he be ok with 3 do I get a second opinion? Is there something else going on? HELP!!!

I've read all your posts and just feel awful for you. I am so sorry. My uncle had a dog when we were kids that had 3 legs. It was the happiest dog I've ever known. He was a stray and found him after he was hit by a car and took him to the vet. He named him lucky. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help. You're in my thoughts.

Oh Radar. I'm so sorry...I thought things would work out this last time. You know, I think it's a great idea to get another opinion.

But, if it really comes to that, Radar will be fine with three legs. I know of a bullmastiff with three legs, and she has a very fulfilling life.

My prayers are with you guys.

I'm crying... I can't believe this has happen.

He will be ok with 3... Many dogs have a vey full life . We had two at daycare that played, ran and did not miss a beat with all the other pups

    Oh Amy, I'm so sorry...
I would get a second opinion if possible (time, distance, pain), because it is such a final decision.
And I go along with Roseann, Cali and Christine - if it has to be done, Radar will find his ways to be an active and happy bullyboy.
    You are in my thoughts...

So sorry to hear this about Radar, you have all gone through so much. You are such good parents to do what you have done for him. It may be best for you to get a second opinion. But if your vet truly believes that amputation is the best way to go,he may be right. What more could be done, with so many surgeries not working? I know a dog who had lost one front leg, having been hit by a car, and when she was healed,it was no big deal to her. They adjust much easier to things than we do. You need to do what you feel is best for him, in the long run. Praying that you can decide what is best.

I do not really know how to advise you. I have never been there. All I will advocate for is the "quality of his life". If he will manage, adapt and live a happy fruitful life with 3 instead of 4, I will be at peace.

Hi Amy, I am so so sorry that you are going through this with Radar. I was hoping and praying for you guys that this last surgery was going to be successful. I agree with the others comments that a second opinion is always a good idea, as it will give you peace of mind that you have done everything you could for Radar. If they do have to take Radars leg, he will be okay, many dogs have lost a leg and they relearn to walk with 3 legs. I know how heart breaking this must be for you, and I hope that something can be done to save his leg, but also know you and the vet will decide and do everything in your power to do what is best for Radar, and he will be okay. Sending love, hugs and prayers your way. Please keep us posted. Have you seen an orthopedic surgeon, or just his vet? Maybe you could ask to be referred to a specialist for the second opinion. Good luck. Keeping my fingers crossed for the best outcome.

Sending all my love to you & your family, Amy, just devastated
to hear this sad news. He will be fine with 3 legs, dogs do so much
better than we do about adjusting to the loss of a leg, they accept
& adjust to it, no self pity or regrets.

What is the Surgeon's answer to WHY and 4 surgeries later, this is
    the result?

You've done EVERYTHING possible to help him, Amy. Knowing your grief, stress and
lack of sleep has you very emotional but nothing of this is your fault.

Talking outta my *** right now but I really question the surgeon & hospital's part in
all this. There is no way Radar is doing anything to break these damn screws, and
FOUR surgeries later, I question if the bone isn't able to 'take' the screws and never
was able to. Do you have insurance that's covering these operations & lengthy stays?
Are these orthopedic specialists? Truly apologetic & please forgive any offense I'm
causing you, Amy but I'm furious and truly heartbroken at what Radar has been put
thru and for y'all's suffering thru this damn nightmare. It sure isn't YOUR fault! Please,
just hold onto the reality of how much you love him & what you've endured to fix him,
only everything possible to be done!

Nope, it's my belief this hospital & staff has FAILED Radar & failed y'all, something
is not right about these surgeries & their continued fails. Radar & y'all deserved
better way back when, I'd get all files & notes and have everything reviewed by
someone & somewhere else (not sure who as I'm shaking w/rage & can't think).

I send my love & prayers you get honest answers & God's clear voice on direction to
proceed. Don't know how you're able to think straight at this point and I hope my
EBN'ers have better ideas than my anger filled rant, please...forgive me, Amy.

Amy.. Do not blame yourself--- you have gone the distance in doing everything possible--- it is horrible it has come to this, but he is young and strong and will easily adjust once healed... It does not hurt anything to get a second opinion so do it.... Sending lots of love and prayers to you and Radar
