    Default Stubborn

We knew that bulldogs were stubborn going into this, but WOW. For example, if we are on a walk and she gets tired she just sits. Cars can wait. School bus? Sorry. My bulldog doesn't feel like moving. Going up the front steps to our house? Nah...I think I'll just sit here and stare at you until you decide to carry me or get a treat to lure me. Bedtime? Why yes, I would love to be carried to the bed. I don't feel like jumping off the couch by myself. Last night I was trying to call her into the bedroom. I waited for 20 minutes....20 MINUTES. I peeked back into the hall and she was still plopped there staring at me. When I gave up and quit calling her she ran into the room and hopped into bed. DIVA. How stubborn are your bulldogs?

Oh YEAH… we ALL deal w/this and our bullies. Some are worse than others… Last night the hubby had to escort (CARRY) Wally to bed, he was just TOO tired to get up off the floor… Lol

We gave up with Blue. He's not food motivated so it makes it that much harder to train. He knows his basic commands but if he doesn't want to do it, he just won't. Only way to make him is by having a toy he wants.

Wellie is easier. He's just as stubborn but very food motivated. When we go out, I always make sure to have treats on me so when he's having one of his "I can't hear you" moments, I can bribe him into listening.
Now if I can just figure out how to make him stop chasing bikes..

Oh lord, can we write a book on this subject! The reason I do not take Brutus many places with me is that when he is done, he is DONE! He will just turn in the opposite direction and start walking the other way and no matter what, I can't move him to go with me unless I say we are going home. When he was a puppy, I would walk him up and down the block and if he decided that he was tired, he would just lay down and go to sleep. Usually on someones front lawn. So there I am with a sleeping blob on the end of the leash. Mr. Frankie is just as bad. If I am saying something he doesn't like, He will turn his head and not look at me. He can do this for hours. He thinks I will just go away or something. I love these crazy bad doggies.

yup. I fear frank may never 'come'. he sits like a champ. his butt is to the ground in a flash. but when I ask him to come, 90% of the time he will just stare at me. shake? stares at me. lay down? stares. leave it? stares with item in mouth making obnoxiously loud chomping and smacking noises.

Harlea does everything I ask her to do. With everyone else in the house she is pretty good with everything except Come. She will sit and stare at them like they are stupid. Lol
Bulldogs are like potato chips. You just can't stop with one.

Hahha now I feel like my jovi is a freak bulldog. She never wants to stop walking!!! Even when her leggies hurt she still will keep walking! But she is stubborn because I have to carry her to bed about 90% of the time and also lift her up into bed, and off the bed. And she has a mind of her own and does what she wants when she wants! She will tell me when it's time to nap, she will pout, whine and bark at me until I say"want to go to bed?!" And she darts in the bedroom. Yet when it's bedtime?! Nope.

    Hehehehe sounds about right.

My bully is actually a service dog and in school we learned a technique involving counting. Basically, when you ask him to do something, he has until you count to three. In example, you say "Sit" and he doesn't sit. So you start "1..... 2..... 3." At three if he still doesn't sit, you VERY LIGHTLY tug on his leash/collar/neck fat and say "no". Then you start over. Eventually, they get sick of the counting (and don't want to be tugged or told no) so they just listen. It is WONDERFUL. But you can bet that Matilda waits until I get to 2.75 before she listens. Hahahaha! The trainer told me they use it because dogs are like people in that they get annoyed when you say the same thing 40 times in a row. The more you say it, the less likely they are to listen. But the counting gets them used to a pattern and gives them time to really think about what you asked them to do. It's also great because it can get the dog's attention in a busy situation. Let's say I'm at the airport with Matilda and want her to heel but she's so distracted she can't hear me - I start counting and once she hears me say "1" I have her full attention again.
You can also get a Pet Corrector (also awesome), as it's just compressed air that makes a noise they find annoying. Use it when they don't listen or do something bad and it will get their attention.
