My recommendation would be to take him to the vet and have them trim it up if possible, especially if he won't let you touch it.

I agree. It could get caught on something, and do more damage-at least they could clean and trim.

I agree with others, a trip to the vet, so they can trip it short, so he won't tear it off the rest of the way.

Update! We have our vet visit in an hour. We got up this morning and Fattycakes (one of his many nicknames) was bouncing around the house. At one point I swear he did a mosh pit dive into the pugs which resulted in an argument between the pugs and the bully, lol. The broken nail is gone, I don't know if he did it or it fell off. We're still going to the vet for a look. Here's a pic. It's messy, looks like it bled a bit and I took it before touching his foot because once touched, it's going to be a battle.

Perfect! This is exactly what happens to Brutus. He always bites the split nail off and he is fine. I spray the nail with Ventricyn wound care and keep an eye on it. Brutus has one right now, he removed the split nail last night and now he just keeps it clean himself by licking it. I usually spray it after a trip outside to make sure no dirt gets in it.

glad it broke off... but it still looks so sore, poor bugger -- hope he heals up quick (no pun intended)

Poor guy it looks painful. Although it sounds like he doesn't notice. Definitely still take him to the vet to get it checked out and cleaned. Maybe they can clip all of his nails for you, they don't get caught on thins as much when they're shorter.
