Has anyone else tried this?

We just discovered that Matilda's constant foot biting is a result of a grass allergy, not anxiety.

It took weeks to get her all fixed up and back to normal!

We live in an apartment and I've decided that instead of making her trek through the heavily pottied on, chemically treated grass around our building, I want to build her a litter box on our balcony!

We used to have the Pet Loo (synthetic grass), and it worked well while she was a puppy, but as she got bigger, it became a DISASTER to clean. It was just disgusting. So I don't want to use any type of synthetic grass. We also don't want to use Weewee pads, as she will eat them.

So I got this idea to make a her a litter box. I think I'm going to get a plastic underbed storage bin, because they're long but shallow and easy to clean, and line it with a tarp, then fill it with doggie litter (apparently different than cat litter because it's not made from clay). What do you think? Has anyone successfully made a bullie litter box?

When I worked at a daycare, we tested these out.... didn't last long as some of the dogs wanted to eat the 'litter', it is made of old recycled newspaper and they thought it was kibble.

have you tried wiping her paws after she is out in the grass? Banks is allergic to all things green and this is what we do... it helps a lot

Hi! Yes, we do. It helps but at this point, it'd be so much easier just to avoid it and only walk on the concrete. The grass here is gross anyway, there are just so many dogs whose owner's don't clean up after them.

What do you wipe Banks' paws with? We used medicated wipes from the vet, but they're very expensive. I've been using baby wipes and then Genesis spray (perscription) as needed, and it seems to be okay, but I wonder if there is something easier to use?

Matilda wouldn't have unlimited access to the potty, we'd have to let her out. I HOPE she wouldn't eat it, though I didn't even think of that! Agh. Maybe I could just use wood chips or something?

We use baby wipes or just a warm cloth... nothing major at all

Don't think wood chips would be such a good idea. At least my dogs are always picking up sticks and pieces of wood. A friend had a chihuahua that was litter trained. He used some kind of litter pellets that were green. May be bagged sand would work? If your dog won't eat sand. I have no experience with doggie litter, only kitty litter boxes.

I just read a book where the owner of a puppy trained them to use a litter box. My sister has a kennel built into her back yard with wood chips for the "potty" area. She has a small dog...not sure how it would work with 2 bulldogs who have to do the "potty kick" when they are done!

Two (sometimes 3) of mine are notorious for eating wood. One just vomited up a bunch of wood pieces this a.m.(thank goodness)-didn't even know she ate it. If your bullie is a wood chuck like mine-better try something besides wood chips! Cocoa mulch is poison. Don't use that!

I live in a house with a backyardbut when my elderly boxer was having a problems taking pee on a grass we swapped ot on astroturf and stones all around .it is worth checking astroturf (artificial grass the shortest type so dog wont try and chew it) and you could easily fit it on your bacony
Shy have a grass allergy ,but i cant have her all the time im my backyard so we also walk her every day so she can socialise we usually use dipper rash cream thin layer (sudocream is the best as it contains less % of harmful substance ) before every walk and then i wipe remains of cream with a damp cloth

When we got Hulk he was litter box trained. When we got home we bought all the stuff (the litter we got is "yesterday's news"). It's the litter for cats that is used after they are declawed. We tried it for a few days but it made a horrible mess and we'd have poopie litter pieces all over the crate and hed fling them outside if the crate. It was disgusting! Also the litter since it's not a clumping litter doesn't coat the poo. It may work but for us it just made more of a mess (and smell).

When I was doing rescue for Great Danes there were times when it was impossible to take them out because of medical conditions or surgery. I got small kiddie pools and went to Lowes (or home Depot or any place that sells bags of straight top soil) and bought a couple bags of top soil and put that in the kiddie pool and spread it around. My rescues would go straight to the kiddie pool and do their business because they all liked the fresh dirt smell. I cleaned it out just like a litter box and every few days would replace the top soil with fresh bags. I took the old top soil outside in one area and spread it around to let it get rained on and washed out. It one point there will be enough of the old top soil clean by mother nature to reuse it. It worked for me on the large breed so I may work on the bullies if necessary. The pools are great because the don't leak and come in a variety of sizes. Good luck!
