What are some great questions to ask a breeder?

Some of you know that my Debo died last week.
And, I have been wanting to thank everyone of you, on this wonderful website that tried to make me feel better! It has just been too hard, to get back on there and thank everyone. I'm sorry.

My spirit is still broken, and I know it's too soon, but I want to start looking for great breeder. I miss my bully sounds and butt wiggles really bad!

I guess a good place to start looking for breeder is the BCA, right? When I find one, what are some great questions I need to ask to make sure I get a healthy bully?

HI there, not that I can help you with a breeder as I am in Australia, but so sorry for your loss, losing a pet is such pain. But you are asking a great question and will look forward to the responses, word of mouth is great as always. Take care and just know you did the best for Debo. When we lost our dog (not a bully) but the house was not the same and straight away we wanted to give love to another dog, which is now our first Bulldog.

Thank you Bazza! Yes, you're right my house is so lonely, I can't stand being here. I'm deeply devastated. And, it sounds like you know how it feels. So thank you!

Hi Emily... good to see you posting again. We are here to help support you... seriously, when I lost my boy, EBN real did help me along.

Sorry to ask this again, I think I did before, but where are you located? BCA is a good start, but if we know your state/town some may be able to give you info via private messages

Can i add to the post few of things that i think should be asked asked

What sort of socialisation or experiences has my your puppies had so far?
Puppies should preferably be raised in a home environment with all the noise and traffic ,as those raised in kennel environment often are not used to all the sounds etc

Have they had vaccinations ,worming -proper breeder should worm and puppies at the age of 6-8 weeks should have at least 1 course of vaccinations the next should be done at 10-12 weeks

Did shire and dam where health tested -i think health testing should be done on both of dogs and any responsible breeder who breeds dogs to better the breed will have dogs tested,so potential genetical problems could be eliminated as sometimes shire and dam can be "carriers " -ask them to see results (in uk we can view results on KC website)

Did vet gave pups clean bill of health -ask for proof

Ok. The essential breeder questions are as follows.....

1. How long has the breeder been breeding Bulldogs.

2. Are all her Sires and Bitches on site and would you be able to see them in person? Be leery of breeders who don't have at least one of them available for you to meet

3. How many litters do the bitches produce in their lifetime? A bully mom should have no more than 2 or 3 litters in her life.

4. Are the parents Akc or Nkc registered?

5. What if any health issues have the parents had? Cherry eye? Hot spots? Hip issues? Allergies?... All of these will likely be passed on to the puppies.

6. Does the breeder offer a health guarantee? And I'd so, till what age? One year is sufficient. Also you Should have a window of a week or so to bring your pup to a vet to be examined and you should have the rite to return the pup for a refund should the vet find something wrong.

7. Have the puppies been de-wormed?

8. Have the puppies been recently tested for parasites?

9. What food have the parents/puppies been fed?

Also a good breeder will be happy to corespondent with you throughout the puppies growth and should be available to answer any questions you have. I email my breeder quarterly with updates on how Luca is doing.
A good breeder is glad to know their dogs went to good homes. If they show no concern then I would be leery.

I'm so sorry about Debo, Emily. I can't even imagine what you must be feeling right now. It may not be my place to say but maybe a rescue bully might be worth considering. For a Bully who needs a home to get one in the wake of this tragedy would be a beautiful tribute to Debo's life and make his passing not be totally in vain. Although, breeder born bullies deserve a good home too. Whatever you choose I wish you better days ahead.

I love those questions! Thank you!

I have been considering a rescue, you're right, it would be a beautiful tribute to Debo's life, what a good way to put it! I have been looking around, I just don't know if it's too soon for me or not. I'm taking it pretty hard and my spirit is broken. So, thank you for wishing me better days ahead!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I all ready dread the day...

First thing I would ask is how has their pervious litters been health wise? If they say they've never had a sick pup, move on....

One question I always ask is how early does the breeder give up their puppies. I am a firm believer in not letting a puppy go before 10-12 weeks. The puppy learns so much during that time with the other puppies and mom. I think a lot of behavioral issues can result from letting them go too early. I also want to know what the breeder feeds their dogs. Someone who feeds crappy food sets off alarms for me.

I look for a website or Facebook page where previous owners are allowed to put comments or share stories about their bullies. Most breeders will have these technologies and have no problem sharing with you.
