Default No more dog park for Luca

All week I took Luca to his favorite dog park. He had a great time everyday we went. He would run and play and wrestle with the other dogs with little to problems. Today was different. As soon as we entered the park Luca got into it with a dog about his size. The owners were were two older Latino ladies; a mother and daughter pair I believe. The older cursed at me in Spanish or Portuguese while I separated the dogs. The younger was more level headed. They checked for injury but seemed to find none though their dog was visibly shaken up. They the left. The younger returned a few minutes later to retrieve a bag that was left behind. She then proclaimed to me that her dog was in fact hurt and would be now going to the vet. I don't know if its just the tone of her voice or her body language but something about her was ticking me off. I told her I'm sorry but this happens at the dog park from time to time. And how do we know it was all my dogs fault? Basically I was a jerk. I understand why she was upset. I shoulda been nicer about it. This is maybe the fourth time Luca has gotten into it with another dog there. Half the time he is provoked as the other half it's him being the jerk. I know now that he is a liability. If I ever see this lady again I would apologize and throw her some cash for the supposed injury but likely wont see her again as I'm turned off from the dog park for good. Luca is not a vicious dog and I'm not just saying that cause he is mine. Most days he just runs with the other dogs and playfully wrestles but one day he's gonna get into a scuffle and go too far and cost daddy some $ or god forbid cause some other family a lot of heartache. I can't have that on my conscience. I don't want to be one of those people who have to go to the park early before every gets there because they know their dog is an #%*hole.
My girlfriend says we should keep bringing him because cutting off his socialization will make matters worse. I just don't know what to do. Maybe this is my fault. Maybe it's cause he and I play rough and he's getting aggressive with other dogs because that's his idea of playtime? I'm not hypocrite. Nothing bothers me more than a parent who refuses to admit their child is a shmuck. Luca is definately on his way.

If my dog doesn't doesnt go to heaven then neither am I.

I left out some pertinent information. To those not familiar with Luca: he is 11 months old and already 61 pounds. Very tail an lean. Solid muscle. I swear he looks like he was built for fighting. All that power in a little puppy brain. Dangerous

In gonna miss that park too. There were a lot of nice people there. Lotta awesome dogs. And now I'm "that guy". So embarrassed. My dog and I were both jerks. . He escaped while I was showering the day before yesterday and today he's a nasty pants. The Gods are punishing me for the indiscretions of my youth or possibly for the lingering idiocy of my 30's.

If my dog doesn't doesnt go to heaven then neither am I.

First of all you're not a shmuck or you wouldn't even care!!! Have you ever had Luca in training? I have always had more than one dog at a time, so you get to see how they work in the "pack" mentality. Of course most bullies are super Alpha type A's... Maybe you could take Luca to the dog park, and keep him on leash to see how he does. I would HATE for both of you to lose out on something that you love... My bully Bella would be so uptight at the dog park, and always stayed w/me (like she was protecting me from other dogs?!!) Roxie my boxer would have an absolute blast!!! I'm thinking that maybe a trainer could help you out w/this... Good luck & keep us posted!!!

Aww, Luca is still young, maybe he doesn't know his strength yet? We have three bulldogs and two of them play together a lot, and it's rough... if someone not knowing them walked past they would probably think they were fighting for real. My Bennie can run full speed into Boeboe hitting her with his chest so she flies off her feet, but she can deal cos she gets back at him, lol. Maybe you must just find the right friend for Luca? and possibly teach him to be a bit careful with smaller doggies Bennie knows when the dogs are smaller than him that he must be careful and he handles them so nicely<3 Good luck with cutie Luca

Maybe a muzzle to help control the situation? That way he can still play but without using his mouth and you can teach him to be play nicer.. and maybe take him to classes to be taught how to socialise nicely

I agree that he is still very young and still learning social boundaries!!! I think enrolling him in basic obedience classes might help you both - I believe it will give you confidence when you are out with him and he will get to learn how he is expected to behave in public!!

i have to admit youre comment that Luca is well on his way towards being a schmuck made me laugh but youre being too hard on yourself. He probably doesnt know his own strength and he is a big puppy. Maybe some one on one time with another dog hes familair with in a controlled environment like your yard might help?

The little punk has already completed puppy socialization and basic behaviors. He just gets into the rough stuff so easy. A personal professional trainer may be in his near future.

Sorry that you had to get upset, when you so enjoy the dog park. I have never been to a dog park, as I have a lot of property and I have never seen a dog park, except on TV.
I agree with the idea of taking him to the park and leaving him on the leash. Having horses, there is a thing called a lunge line-and I believe they may have something similar for
dog training. It is a lead about 20 ft. long. perhaps you could take him back to the park w a regular leash-so he won't be isolated at home. Then, maybe try using the long line-so that if he gets too rowdy, you can pull him back quickly. My dogs play quite rough with each other and get along well, but if one hurts the other-like a pinching bite(they have never seriously hurt one another) they will get angry and I have to say-take it easy, no fighting! I feel that the less he sees other dogs, the worse things will get. Just my opinion. You know they're like @^$holes everyone's got one

I know what you mean, Sandra! Mabel has tried to take pieces out of other dogs at the vet's office, too. She was really into a wagging tail that was attached to a dog someone was holding. I just can't trust her.
