    Default Duchess has dishchiosis

Duchess went to the eye specialist today and it has been confirmed she has dishchiosis. The eye specialist was great and I was referred to her through a few people in my raw co-op. She has been an eye doctor for animals for 35 years. the specialist also says that she has very mild medial entropian. She said that at this point she does not recommend treating the medial entropian as it is not causing discomfort and no lashes are touching and it is very minor and only on the inner most corner of the eyes. As far as the distichiasis duchess has it in both eyes and on all four lids. The left eye doesn't bother her but the right eye does. Fortunately she does not have any scratches or ulcers on her eyes. She was prescribed neo-poly dex. The Doctor recommended the cryo surgery and said 60% of the time it doesn't need to be re-treated. I asked if I should wait until she get old to do the procedure to see if more protrude and she said I can but risk more damage due to the fact that she is so young and her right eye muscle is constantly pulling the eye in due to irritation. So ill be moving forward in the next couple weeks I just have to work out my schedule. The dr said it is a one day procedure no overnight stay and no cone of shame. My questions is since she will be going under and I know there's certain anesthetic that bulldogs don't do good with, what is the "safe" way for them to go under? The dr said she uses Atropine for pre anesthetic , and combination of ketamine and diazapam as a sedative. The anesthia she uses is sevoflurane. Is this all safe for bulldogs? She said its a pretty easy procedure but it's still worrisome.

Well hopefully the surgery will go well and she will have a quick recovery. Isoflourine and Sevoflurane are both safe for bullies. our Vet uses Isoflourine for C-sections

Lucky you w the no over night stay and no cone? Brie just had the cryosurgery done on all 4 lids, had to stay for a night and has been wearing a cone for a week. Hers were horrible tho. Had ulcers in both eyes as a result. I hope your wonderful baby heals quickly! Those ingrown hairs really hurt. The specialist used Isoflourine for Brie's surgery.

It sounds to me your Dr knows what she's dong and these are both better
for bullies as anesthetics. It is aways risky putting bullies under but most do
well and sometimes procedures must be done as this one should. Keep us
    informed, please.

Saying prayers for you & Duchess...GOD bless you!

Thanks guys!! The doctor was great she came out and greeted duchess and let her give her a million kisses and then brought her in the examination room. Midway through the exam she took a break cause duchess was squirmy and pulled out a huge bin of freeze dried raw treats and let duchess pick her own! From that point on they were best friends. She was very thorough in explaining everything and really gained my trust when she mentioned duchess has mild medial entropian but did NOT want to correct it as it was not doing any damage & no lasshes were in contact with the eye except the one on the inmer lid, and didn't see any benefit. Also all meds and follow up visits are included in the $800-$1200 quote she gave me. You know what's weird is all the research I did about bulldogs and this is the first I've ever heard of this condition . Everybody warns about entropian when your looking at getting a bulldog but this doctor says this condition is more prevelant than entropian.

Sounds like a great vet and the anesthesia and pre anesthesia sound good too. This condition is pretty common in other breeds, it could be more common in EBs where you live. I don't know of many on this forum that have had it... But now with threads talking about it I'm sure google will bring more to us than we know and we may see a lot more bullies with it.

the more I learn about this breed and their genetics the more fascinated I become. I don't necesarily think it would be where I'm from but more so a blood line? Duchess came from a breeder in Oklahoma . What's disheartening though is everytime I reach out to the breeder she says that neither duchess mother or father who is ch exact classic kokie brick have EVER had any issues! Come on I'm not blaming you I just want you to know so we can trace the problem and see if it lies on the mother or father side. God I hope not the father side as he is a champion and is open for stud service. The vet told this condition is hereditary but very hard to say if offspring will develop it, but with entropian there is no clinical evidence that it is hereditary , just some breeds are more prone due to genetic make up.

Good for you for contacting the breeder tho. They should be more receptive n less concerned about blame. You dont want to breed known medical issues into new litters! My vet told me it is hereditary as well, is pretty common w bullies, and is a lot more common then ppl think in all dogs. He also said humans suffer from the more than we think as well. I'm so glad you have a vet that seems wonderful!

I am really sorry to hear about her eye and the way the breeder is being. This information is EXTREMELY fascinating to me. That you can trace it back to the mother or the father is incredible..
