Sassy and Dozer
We bought an English Bulldog puppy from a local place being told that it was an English Bulldog. The word "mini" was never mentioned in the adopting process. It wasn't until I few days later I went back to see another EB that they had and was talking to the owner and she said that the one that we got was considered a mini. She said that Dozer will only get to be about 45lbs. None of this was mentioned when we got him. My husband feels like he's been screwed.
Our intention was to breed our two EB's but now I'm not sure if we should. From my research a mini is just a smaller statured bully and is still an English Bulldog. Does anyone have an EB on the smaller side?
I've also noticed that his temperament is totally different from our female, Sassy. He is scared of everything, I joke with my husband that he has a sissy boy. Dozer doesn't like to be picked up or cuddled, he runs to Sassy if he gets scared of something, he tends to shy away from people, he follows Sassy around as if he is her shadow, always walks around with is tongue sticking out and is very stingy with their toys. Sassy on the other hand loves to sit on our laps, follows me everywhere, is almost fearless and is a social butterfly.
Dozer is only 12 weeks, do you think he will grow out of some of his "sissy" ways? Do you think it would be safe to breed our two EB's? They both have excellent champion bloodlines. We would, of course, get the both tested for any type of hip, eye and overall health issues beforehand. I just don't want to hinder the EB's breed in any way.

Is it an AKC registered pup?

If you're talking AKC Bulldogs there is no such thing as a "mini bulldog". Bulldog vary greatly in size and the AKC Breed standard is 50 pounds for males and 40 pounds for females. You can see it may well be much lower than you expected. I have one friend who has an adult AKC EB who is under 35 pounds. I have another with an older pup who is under 30 pounds and she expects it to top out in that range. If you're talking a registry other than AKC, look at that registry's breed standard.

He is an AKC registered Bulldog. Maybe he'll just be on the smaller side? Do you think he'll come out of his shell eventually?
Thank you very much for responding!

Kaida
When we picked up Kaida at the airport (we got her from a breeder out in OK) she was much smaller than we had expected as well. She only weighed 4.6 lbs at 8 weeks old and is now a year old, still on the smaller side (but I have to say I prefer her this way). She fluxuates between 33 and 35 lbs and is quite the spunky girl. I never had any issues with her being timid or fearful. She's a very affectionate pup, lively pup. Our newest fur-kid in comparison is a bit of a "baby". She's a 10 week old American Bulldog and follows Kaida everywhere - they are home alone while we work during the weekdays (with exception of the dog walker visits 2x a day) and has obviously bonded closely with Kaida. So, Kaida follows us - and Jade follows Kaida. She's just over 20 lbs so I'm sure she's going to be a big girl...has the paws to prove it too!

Good luck with your bullie - It sounds to me like he's just on the smaller side, not a mini - as he's AKC registered (like our Kaida).

A bully can come in all shapes and sizes, so a small bulldog is just that. A small bulldog! Our Maggie was only about 34-36lb full grown, and yet Bella is around 52lb full grown.

As for his personality ... again you are going to get all kinds of different characteristics and personality traits from one bully to another. It does sound like he was not very well socialised when he was at the breeder. So it may take a little more effort for him to realise that you are his Mummy and Daddy and to treat you as such. I would just persevere and show him that you will be there to protect him and love him unconditionally, and then you should see him come out of his shell a bit more.

As far as the "mini" part goes I think you got all the info you need. If you have questions about breeding perhaps Davidh could help you out there.

Yes, I expect he will come out of his shell but he may never be as brave as Sassy. He will have his own personality which will develop as he does. Going through puberty will help him "get tough, get mean" as it does most boys of any species. LOL

As to breeding, It's always a crap shoot with bulldogs. There are lots of threads on this board about the pros and cons of breeding. It is a costly, difficult and dangerous undertaking. Please read everything you can get your hands on about it. There are several breeders who frequent this board and they can assist with words of wisdom and reading recommendations. I thought about breeding and researched it for a number of years. I finely decided I didn't have the temperament to deal with all the potential disasters that a breeder has to face. I get chills when I think of some of the problems some of my on-line breeder friends have had to face. Scary stuff.

Well let me first say he is just a cutie. If he stays small, I would not breed him to another female. We had a beautiful girl, big boned and we just knew she way going to be great in the ring. But she only got to about 40 lbs. and stayed there. So we decided to have her spayed and found her a fur-ever home. If they do not meet the AKC standard in any way, I will not breed them. As far as him being scared of everything, he is still a baby, at 12 weeks and will take a long time before he grows up and things won't be so scary. Buddy was the same way. Some are scared of things and some aren't Diva out 10 month old female isn't scared of a thing, or anyone. So just be patient. Here is an excellent article on breeding bullies.

He is 12 weeks old and so at what age did you acquire him? If before 8 weeks or older he may not have been socialized much which may explain some of his timid ways. He may always be a bit reserved but then again maybe not as he is still too young to know. I would bet he will come out of his shell now that he is around you guys and another dog. But dang he sure is cute. Bulldogs have such wide ranging personalities going on the posts I have read here and my own Ace. This is just another of one of their endearing characteristics. They have very pronounced personalities, and every one of them endearing in their own way. They are individuals just like humans in that way.

Ace is as rambunctious as anyone could ask for around the house [sometimes more than some would want] and very affectionate too. But I have noticed when I take him away from the house and he is around strange dogs and people he is at first much more reserved, less rambunctious but still affectionate and likes to shake up to and be touched by others. You may find something similar with your own little boy. He may be one way around all that he knows well and a little different around others, strangers. His personality is still being developed. I bet he will be so winsome he will make your heart melt

My wife would shoot me though If I mentioned getting another bulldog at this point in time.

Daisy
Hi there! Well Daisy is considered a Mini bulldog. Not a miniEBD What Ive read up on them is that the Mini EBD are basically bred by getting the two smallest puppies from different litters( of course) And thats what makes them small. I guess it can be done through several breedings. Daisy is a EBD/Pug. They call them either mini bulldog or pugabull. We are told she will get to around 30 pounds. When we brought her home at 8 weeks she was about 5 pounds... and in the last 2 weeks shes gained 3 pounds.. Hope some of that info helps.

When I first got Rocky, he tilted the scale at 47.7 pounds, now he's right at 50, yet he was the runt of the litter, The other day while at Pet Smart, another owner of EBD asked if Rocky was a mini ebd, and I replied no, and he said his EBD was 75 lbs, I read somewhere, typically Males were 50-55 pounds, and females a little smaller, typically, my first question to this guy was what do you feed your EBD, and he replied nothing but Royal Canine, 34 oz bottle a day all at one feeding, and I feed Rocky 1 ¼ cup Blue buffalo in the morning, and the same in the evening for a total of 2 ½ cups a day. Rocky is solid though, and even at 50 pounds looks butterballish lol.
