Default Dozer Update 3 wks after adoption

It was three weeks ago today we went to meet our big smoosh Bulldozer Bawss. If you are new to our story, a few weeks back we saw an ad online for a bulldog up for adoption and we were so moved by the photos as he looked so much like our Penelope. After exchanging a few emails we discovered the puppies were littermates. Of course it was love at first sight for us, and for Penelope and Dozer it was a joyous reunion. I know in my heart they remembered each other and they were instantly inseperable.

The first week was pretty crazy! The puppies could barely sleep they were sooooo excited to be together. Penelope was to be spay before Christmas but was postponed as she had a cold. Two days after Dozer came home, Penny went in to her first heat and it was two more days before Dozer was neutered. The surgery went well and his recovery was remarkable. He came to us with infected eyes and three claws cut in to the quick. He has recovered from these things but on friday we were advised he has hip dysplacia. He is just 10 months old and not showing any signs of discomfort nor is his mobility effected but of course we are worried for him. We will follow up with the specialist in August and decide treatment from there.

In Dozer's former home, he had been alone for ten hours a day, six days a week. For the first ten days or so with us, he could not be alone, and he could not be without Penelope. He would whine and whimper for me if I was in another room even. He is a very vocal bulldog! He makes noise all the time - he barks and he whimpers and he cries. Oh and he sings too when my youngest plays the harmonica.

Dozer had adjusted amazingly well. It feels like he has always been with us, and certainly always meant to be with us. From the very first day he came in and made himself at home, both in our house and in our hearts. We feel so very blessed to have found him and to have him be part of our family. I can't even say how much it warms my heart to see these two dogs love each other so much.

And of course the thread is so much better with photos!

Dozer looks like he's adjusting perfectly. That's amazing news We're getting our 8 month old girl a brother in a couple weeks and we're so excited. I have a question regarding the hip dysplasia...were there any warning signs that you noticed or did the vet tell you when you had him neutered?

Aww so cute, they love each other. I also have a brother and sister, they are 11 months old, their names are Bulldozer ( Dozer for short ) and Blossom. So I have a Dozer too.

Your brother and sister are perfect together! I am sorry to hear about Dozer's hips, you should let the breeder know.

@mdn525 we'd thought to get Penelope a little sister this summer, and in my mind I'd always thought Petunia was the perfect name for Penelope's little sister. Love the name.

Dozer doesn't show any signs as far as his hips go. Maybe someone with more expertise may see signs but to us, none are apparent, and I do A LOT of reading. He is very not perfect as far as the breed standards go and his feet. His front feet are very easty-westy and his back feet are kinda pigeon-toed. To meet it's the cutest thing but it may be that the placement of his back feet is affected by his hips. He is the most completely mobile bulldog I've ever seen. He jumps up and down and negotiates stairs. He gets up and down from our bed like it's nothing. He appears very athletic for a bulldog.

We asked for the hip xrays to be done while Dozer was under for his neutering as the best xrays are done while the puppies are not concious. We didn't anticipate him being under at any other time so we opted for it. The surgeon who did the neutering showed us the xray but

For now, we keep him strong, watch his weight, and watch for any signs of discomfort or changes in mobility. I will attach a photo of his xray in case you or anyone is interested. His case is certainly not as severe as the example in the article on hip dysplasia on EBN if you've seen it. My vet explained with bulldogs they like to see a minimum of 65% attachment in the socket and Dozer is less than half at best.

From the research I've done, the best we can do for him is ensure he has the best food and the best exercise to keep him strong. When he is closer to full-grown, in August, we will have a follow-up appointment and then decide on if/what treatment is needed.

Awwww @Vikinggirl I love the shot of Bulldozer and Blossom with Santa. So cute! Seems to be a special kind of bond between littermates.

@Alice Kable I am in the process of digging out the paperwork but unfortunately this breeder is a whole other, NOT NICE kind of story as in @RAKA Bulldog 's recent post about a puppy ring in Canada. This guy gave me a nice story about his aunt and uncle and their family-raised litter 20 minutes away and have to admit I believed him. Two months later his website disappeared and he is back in action under another name. I am no longer sure where my babies came from but will do anything I can to hold this guy accountable and make public his new website. He is again selling both english and french bulldogs as I saw an ad yesterday.

@PenelopeRosebud - "shouldn't stir a bear in the middle of a cold, Canadian winter", how true. I've looked at his x-ray, and I have a girl that looks like that. I've read elsewhere also that you shouldn't do anything evasive until they are closer to 18 months of age as they are still growing and things change.

This is an x-ray of my 3 year old girl, just for comparison. And not all cases are the same, so by all means please don't take my word for it, and have a follow up definately considering where he came from.

I just love a good story and like to see siblings come together like you two did, and I know they do remember each other. This is such a great story and I'm so happy they are together again. As far as his hips go, I think you are doing the right thing and wait awhile and let him get a little older before seeing a specialist. The surgery is very hard on them and very expensive, so we will hope it doesn't get that bad where you have to make that decision.

So, love this story! Thanks for the updates and all the great pictures!!

As for the hips, our Banks has HD and we were told when she was about 8 months old, but our instructions were to keep her weight under control and give her glucosamine. she is now 7 years old and does not show any signs of issue with her walking, running, jumping, stairs... anything at all. So, here is to you having the same result and your boy not needing any surgery.

    Keep us posted!

@RAKA Bulldogs Thanks Michelle - it's good to see another to compare. We won't take any evasive action until and unless necessary. He is definately completely mobile at this stage and we have a good routine now in place. He is getting the best food and good exercise and doing so great! Just love him to bits. It feels like he has always been with us.
