Bordatella Vaccine

I took Elly to the vet today for her first checkup since bringing her home on Sunday. The vet wanted to give her the vaccine via the nasal application, but I opted against it, as I recalled reading that bullies should always be given the shot. She told me that the nasal spray is much more effective and she only uses the shot on aggressive dogs. I really like this vet, but she is not a bully specialist (i.e. I will only use her for routine things). I thought about calling the vet I am most likely going to use for her spay (Dr. Spector from Woodland Heights, NJ...my breeder checked around for me and she is supposed to be one of the best in the Philadelphia area), but would appreciate your thoughts in the meantime. TIA.

Most people don't get the nasal spray. There have been very bad reactions to it among Bully's. You did the right thing. Davidh has info on this

Thanks. The vet asked me what my concerns were, and I couldn't really give her an answer, lol. I just knew that I read it was to be avoided with bullies and other brachycephalic breeds.

I believe Bully's have died from lung problems after the nasal spray. I know why vets give it..you get instant protection..but there are risks.

I just refused to give my bullies nasal vaccines. My vet thought I was too cautious but went to another vet to get the shot for me. Don't forget it's your baby you tell the vet what YOU want.

To the vet's credit, she was not pushy or condescending. She encouraged me to do more research on the issue before making a decision and applauded me for being an informed owner.

Lola got the nasal spray but I didnt know tell after. At my vet they take them in the back to weigh them, check for worms, and to give shots. I wasnt thrilled with it but watched her close and she was ok. Next time I will tell the vet before hand not to give it like that!

That sounds like a good vet to me, even if she isn't a bulldog specialist. We always get our bulldog the shot, twice a year as to leave him at Doggy Day Camp he has to be up to date on his Bordatella/Kennel Cough vaccine. Poor boy is due soon for it, but he'll like going to see Dr Lori.

It is best to get the shot, especially with a pup. I have known several pups get pneumonia from the nasal spray, and some have died. There have been others that got the nasal spray with no consequences, but in my books, why take the chance.

You can get the shot (needle) - just not the nasal spray

Ask for the shot form but don't refuse the Bordetella shot altogether if you plan to take your babies around other pets.
I skipped it last time for financial reasons and we can't socialize or go to petco until I get it done. I always get the shot form only.
