Neutering

Hi all ... Mr. Seamus is 15.5 weeks and just went in to the vets for his last round of puppy vaccinations. He weighs 20.5 lbs and is doing wonderfully! Hopefully the giardia is cleared up and his poos continue being good.

Quick question about neutering. I go to a very reputable vet who is known to be a bulldog specialist. She quoted me for neutering Seamus around $650 (which includes staying over night the day of the procedure). Does that sound about right? My sister has an American Mastiff and she got her spayed at a local "Prevent a Litter" non-profit for $35. She is trying to convince me to go somewhere like that to get Seamus done.

What are your opinions about non-profits and neutering with bulldogs? I just want to make sure we choose the best for Mr. Seamus and make sure he gets the best care (but not get ripped off either!).

We don't have any "bulldog specific" vets near us, but we just got Tonka neutered an it was 420 including the optional pre-op bloodwork I had done. We are also in Canada where, in my experience anyways, things tend to be more expensive

Oh and I forgot to add that it would be an extra $75 to fix his HUGE umbilical hernia. We live in Washington DC where everything is 10 times more expensive than anywhere else, which I expected. But I am just trying to figure out if it would make sense to do it at our vets or try a non-profit like Prevent a Litter.

I'm not sure who you would contact but here in NJ there is something called SpayNJ. You call them and they will send you a certificate to take to any participating vet for a discount spay or neuter. Most vets and animal hospitals accept the certificates so there was no non-profit to deal with.

I was going to take Abby to her regular vet because they participate in the program. It would have cost us 140.00 for the whole deal. Maybe there is something like that near you?

Just be sure they have experience placing bulldog under.... there is a better drug for them, but I can not remember it.

It's Isoflourane gas! Imperative !!



$650 seems too high! My vet here in Southern California charged $365.. And that included $85 extra to repair an umbilical hernia.

Wow that does seem high. We paid $350 for Gator. That being said, I would want to make sure they are using the right anesthesia. Bulldogs can have issues with that. It is the Isoflorane gas like @jake is great said. Don't be afraid to ask about it. I am not sure I would do the non-profit. They are wonderful and offering low cost spay/neuter is a wonderful thing to prevent unwanted litters but I still probably wouldn't do it there. I certainly would NEVER judge anyone who used them! JMO

Good info here. We have the same decision to make about altering our pets. There is a non-profit that charges about $85. But I think that we are going to make the drive to a bulldog specialist vet.

Maybe someone change chime in on neutering age. I have researched about neutering before he is a year old.
