The ortho called back with an update. No surgery. They did an MRI and then backed up the findings with a CT scan. It seems that Gator has a spinal abnormality and it is possible that the issues he is having are a result of some sort of inflammation. They will be sending the results to Ohio State for a second opinion as well as sending some spinal fluid to be tested for infection.
We still do not know a definative diagnosis so no true prognosis. It could be that something aggravated it and we can get past this episode and he can live a fairly normal life with some lifestyle modifications (like ramps, etc). But it could also be that with his growth, he could be at the point that nothing will make it better and he will continually deteriorate. If it IS a deformity and not a mass (which he did not see on the x-ray, CT or MRI), it can go either way. That is why they are getting a second opinion, to see if they think there is a mass. If that is the case, they will need to go in and see it and see if there is anything that can be done. We really don't know and won't until Monday or so. If it is a abnormality, there may or may not be options surgically but they will not be able to actually correct it.
We may be able to pick him up in the morning and manage him at home until we get an answer. Please keep the prayers coming. I am trying to focus on what I do want and not what I am afraid of in the hopes that positive thinking might help.
