It will take time but she is young and can overcome it. It will take patience on your part.

It took some of my fosters months to come out of their shell when they have lived in a crate all their lives. The reason yours likes the outdoors is because she probably hasnt spent too much time on grass. New feelings of freedom is probably why she likes it so much. If there are specific things bothering her let me know and I will see if I can help....

@NikkiSchoolcraft Im tagging she might have some more insight on how to help her

Nothing to add.... This is fantastic advice.

Hello there! I don't really have any thing else to add that's not already been said, but your an angel for adopting Lucy. Give her lots of time, patience, coax her with her favorite snack or kibble and lots and lots of love. She's going to need lots of time and needs to learn to trust you. She's led a sheltered life so far in her short 3 years. Can't wait to see pictures of Lucy.

Here is another question: Should I close her crate door (so she doesn't go in) while we are home so she explores some more? Or will this confuse her even more?

    Thanks

I'm no expert here on this but if it was my Lucy, I would leave it open for a week or two giving her time to adjust to her new home.

Agree... then start closing it while you are with her.

You know I thought of that after I posted it and went to go get ready for work. I was coming back to say that very thing, start closing the door when you are home.

Another thing, after Lucy starts setting in and isn't always rushing to her crate for a her safe spot, you can leave the door open while your there too. My guys love to go into their crate when we're home to take a nap. Lucy is different though and needs to learn that she can trust you and her new enviroment. to Lucy!

great advice from everyone. even puppies can be on the shy side like my 11 month old Lola. we close the crate when she's home with us there....and sometimes we have to scoop her out in the morning or after work. ok, we always have to scoop her out of the crate. she just loves sleepin in there!
