I need an expert advice immediately and i canā€™t seem to find someone in my area who is an expert with english bulldogs. I live in Mumbai india and there arenā€™t too many vets around who know much about English bulldogs.

Frooti is 3 years and old she has been recently diagnosed with pyometra. I have consulted with a few veterinarians around my area who suggest i take her to the best. Now having done that, i am not happy because the surgeon suggests we carry out a major surgery and remove her uterus and that's scheduled for tomorrow at noon. I am not going to do it anymore after reading a few articles on different websites that suggest anesthesia on bulldogs can be lethal if its not done properly. I dont want Frooti to die because of any wrong reason on our final call.

The sonogram report shows small 4 blood sacs that might have occurred due to urinary track infection. We noticed blood in the urine and carried out immediate blood tests this morning. The Kidney and liver functions are all normal within range. The WBC count is high on 24300. The RBC,hemo and other parameters are all normal.

Frooti can hog all day long, but she's been rejecting food past 3 days now and drinks a lot of water than normal. With 500mg amoxyclin shots past 3 days, the vets been trying to keep her away from any infection.

Behavior : She been slower than normal for the past 5 days now. She pooped little, but been urinating more than normal. The stomach feels hard and slight blot up than normal. I saw her jump at me while throwing darts which is her usual habit yesterday. She is partly active. Today she walked with me outside very slower than normal. I feel worried.

Tomorrow I am taking the reports with me for a second opinion from another surgeon at the Veterinary Hospital. I doubt they've dealt with too many bull dogs before. Its very rare in india. I hear there are less than 30 in all of our country and i dont know of anyone other than a breeder who seems most sensible. He suggests not to put her under knife and give her 250mg amox tablets for a few more days 1-1/day to have it flushed out.....athough i dont know if that will be help. The amox shots are on past 4 days now.

Are there any laproscope procedures that are possible without having to cut her open? or any other methods at all ?

I have experience with Pyometra. It is deadly if left untreated. My foster made it through it just fine. Antibiotics will not clear it up, it has to be removed. Thats why she is slowing down and not eating much. IF you wait too long she could die or infection will spread. I want to stress that this is deadly.

I have no words to help, I am sorry. As for the surgery and anestheisia they need to have isoflourine I believe. Not sure on the spelling. We have many members here who can correct me on that if I am mistaken. Surgery is very scary even when done by bulldog specialists so I understand you worry but if deadly then it is your only choice. :( Please keep us up to date on what happens. Poor baby!

Thats what I couldnt remember was the Iso being used. I dont mean to scare you but my foster had it for who knows how long when I got her. Had the surgery but it had already traveled. Had to stay in the hospital for over a week and on med for two months to get her red and white blood cells back up. Thankfully that happened.

Yes..the most important thing is the type of anesthesia used. Isoflourane gas is the safest and my vet treated with a per surgical dose of Valium. That was to relax them so the tube for gas could be put down their throat safely. Please study the importance of the correct anesthesia. And get the surgery done! Safely! Good luck to you and your precious girl.

Best of luck! As everyone else has said, check about the type of anesthesia they use. Iso is the safest.

Isofluorane or sevofluorane is safest to use for bulldogs. Hope all goes well tomorrow.

Best of luck...with the decision and the procedure, I pray all goes well.

I have no experience with this issue, but agree the anesthesia is very important.

frooti, best of luck to you guys tomorrow. I know its scary but you seem to have done some research and make sure you talk to your vet about the anesthesia. Have she been on IV's also?

I spent the whole morning and afternoon at the hospital. It was good idea to have opted for the 2nd opinion. This morning i woke up to a pool of blood on the kitched floor where frooti slept all night. it seemed like she'd lost a lot of blood. I rushed her immediately to the hospital and we ran a quick sonoscan. The vet told me its seemed like she was flushing all the crap out and her uterus was contracting back to normal. If she continues to lose more of fluids through the vaginal discharge it could be dangerous. The good news is she's be losing all the toxic material naturally and she may not a surgery at all. But we now have her on drip with all the fluids going thru IV next 3-4 days . Since she is weak the vet has arranged for one of his assitants to come to our place and do the IV job twice everyday. Its 1151pm here in India and Frooti is right on the drip while i am sending out this update. The doctors will run another sonoscan to look for anything odd in 3-4 days after we are done with the drip.
