Bruno the rescue dog is learning to sit. At first sit meant stand there and stare at you. He would much prefer to chase a bone or a ball than learn how to sit. He is getting there. He knows lay in my lap without any voice or hand commands. He sometimes prefers an elevator ride onto the couch. Lay down, come, quit it and quite a few other commands still result in the just stand there and stare response. btw the photo on the left is a perfect example of the stand there and stare response.

My rescue did the same in the beginning but would look up and stare at the ceiling and blatantly ignore me before I got the stare. I adopted her 2 months after the rescue got her, she was a breeder surrender (I don't think it was a voluntary surrender) and had lived most of her life in a cage and she exhibited behaviors an abused and beaten dog would exhibit. She was completely un house broken as well. Thankfully I am home 24/7 to have progressed so much with her in a short period of time and rarely ever leave my property due to being disabled from a wreck. I do daily training sessions with grandma Lucy's baked doggie treats and it's gotten her to understand basic commands and what I'm asking. It's like she didn't understand our words at all except for her name. My tone of voice including baby talk made no difference. It took some time but we got there and so will you and Bruno. My best wishes for you both. :0)

One of the many reasons i love Bully’s :D they know exactly what you want them to do BUT THEY will decide when to do it ! And it usually involves a treat :D

It sometimes helps to find something that they do without a command and go from there.

Example: When Lala was young she would come to me(or Sandy) and drop on her back or side for a belly rub...not always, but sometimes. We saw an opportunity here and started treating her when she did that. Then when she dropped we would roll her over before treating her. The next step was to say "Bang, your dead!" as we rolled her over. Once she got the roll over part down we started pointing our finger at her at the same time we said, "Bang...". It only took a few days of repeating before I could point my finger at her and she'd drop and play dead...don't even need to say the Bang part anymore...but we do for effect. She will do it for anyone now. People love it!

Here she is in training.
