well someone else was doing this before i took it over and i think it is an old rating that was not removed and refers to the dry kibble as if you look on the picture of the kibble bags they have dinner fare on them. thanks for pointing this out to me so i can remove it. its all dry kibble rated here for now. might add some canned at some point since lots here feed it.

Many thanks. I feed both dry and canned, so would be interested in seeing a review of the latter also.

Oliver
Oliver was recently diagnosed with some esophageal/cardiac sphincter issues. We were told to switch from a dry food to a wet, which left us a little lost. Oliver has always been on grain-free food. We are currently using Nature's Recipe wet - which isn't grain-free. I know they DO make a grain-free but he just didn't like it at all. The good news is that the wet food has definitely made a HUGE improvement with his issues (no more regurgitation!) but not being grain-free, I am already seeing a few very minor skin issues that we'd like to cut off before they become bigger issues. Oliver is quite picky, which is annoying. If he has to be on wet food, which he does, I'd prefer it to be fish based (our vet believes that chicken based foods are considered "hot foods" which are a little harsher on the belly; we agree) and he only seems to like Chicken for this brand. (we've tried them all.)

So, my question is: Does anyone have any opinion on any brand(s) of wet, grain-free food OR a wet non-grain-free food that isn't chicken based?

I used the Fromm Beef Frittata wet food for Banks for a few months she did very well on it.

AdventuresWithOliver - if you need to find Fromm locally, they have it at Rogers in Brick. I'm not really a fan of that store since dogs are not allowed in. Stupid! And they aren't always the friendliest. But if you try it and it works you could always order from petflow.com for the future! I'm probably gonna switch back to Fromm. Chunk looks good but stinks, I've heard many stories of stink going away from Fromm. Lol

Re: Dog Food Ratings & Recommended Dog food choices

thank you for stating just that !! most foods are to high in protein for a non working breed such as Bulldogs. and the Grain Free is way beyond their coping without issues!
that is one of the many reasons I recommend Fromm .both the 4 star (with 1 meat ) and the Gold (with several meats--to prevent a intolerance to any given meat over time)--first try all the 4 stars to make sure your dog isn't actually allergic to any of the meats!! BUT 99% of the time--unless you have seen a specialist -and they have stated that yes your dog is allergic to a given meat !! chances ARE --your Bulldog is just intolerant to the quality of the ingredients in the current food being eaten.--THAT'S A BULLDOG FOR YOU--- that is why the food rating system doesn't work so well for bulldogs!! they require the very highest quality in any ingredient in the food. starting with the meat!!! prime cut muscle meat ---no organ bi products either. and the veggies and fruit DO make a difference regarding the quality as well. compare quick oatmeal to slow cooking whole grain oatmeal, and you will see the difference. I have in the past recommended , California natural, or wellness and the like ---BUT as soon as I find they sell out to big pet food Co's. I stop, -- and I am not affiliated with the Fromm Family Foods at all. !!! but I have researched them thoroughly for Bulldogs, and I know what Bulldogs require !!! the best !!!! the Fromm Family foods are the first company to invent dry kibble , in 1904,and started the distemper vaccine too. the FROMM Family foods put the ANIMALS before pure profit !!!they get the meat delivered for each day. they DO NOT get any protein from rendering plants ever !!!!!! so far --they are the ONLY ones that I have found that do not use the rendering plants for the pet food!!! sad ..
I can tell you how hot and how long many --many of the food brands are cooked at , and many are to hot and to long, meaning nutrients are lost. Fromm is cooked @ 255 for less than 2 minuets. long enough to sanitize but not loose nutrients. these findings are simply my opinion!!!! my passion is for the health of Bulldogs everywhere, 99% of all vet visits are due to allergies of one kind or another, and it boils down to food!!! if you don't have a lot of flowers blooming in the yard, bark dust in the yard, and are NOT using Tide to wash laundry. chances are pretty good that any skin issues are food allergies or to high in the protein . all the licking toes, yeast in ears, hot spots. they all go away with the Fromm food in about 4 to 6 weeks.
the rating of dog foods is every where but ask yourself WHO PAYED FOR THE RATINGS ???? and any good food does not need advertizement !!! it sells its self !!!! if you see a food on TV --there is a reason !!!!it is to expensive to advertise unless really needed.

We have a page here at English Bulldog News with dog food ratings. These ratings are based upon ALL DOG BREEDS. So is a 6 star food better than a 4 star food? Maybe not for a bulldog. 6 star foods contain a lot of protein which is not good for non-active dogs. So now, we want your help in giving advice for our future dog food changers. We would like you to put your recommendations here on this thread, and we are going to provide a link to this thread on the "Dog Food Ratings" page at English Bulldog News.

Ok, I am currently feeding Coop BB grain free puppy food. He really does not have major issues on this food other than heavy shedding(which could be the time of year) and semi loose stools. I am very interested in the Fromm food line. What would be the best Fromm grain free formula to try cooper out on? Also, if washing bedding and blankets in Tide is no good for a Bulldog, what detergent should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Either the Fromm Beef Frittata or Pork and Peas would be good to start with, both are chicken free which seems to be an issue with a lot of Bullies. I use All Free n clear and it seem to be good for my two.... I think Tide has on just like it.

Please remember that in kibbles: Low Protein = High Carbs because the Nutrition data in the back of the bag is a Percentage not actual amounts.

Dogs are not efficient at digesting carbs. So, if you are worried that your dog is going to get fat with the high protein because he is not active, don't lower the protein percentage to balance this because you are just increasing carbs. What is recommended is to reduce the SERVING SIZE so you keep the same protein to carbs ratio to support a dog with a low activity level.

We have (3) different breeds of fur-babies but we feed them all 4Health from Tractor Supply. It is supposed to be comparable to Taste of the Wild. We also add fresh cooked beef, chicken, fish or liver to their feeding once a day, as well as cooked eggs. We add coconut oil, GSE and Nutri-Cal (for puppies and pregnant or nursing mommies only). We have had great success using these products and feeding this food. We tried Blue in the beginning but caused serious diarrhea. We tried various other brands and there were additives or manufacturing facility issues that steered us away from them. They've been on this kibble for over a year now. We have a lot of fur-babies and through research found that this is the best dry kibble for our babies and for us. No digestion issues or major health concerns (yet....touch wood).

Did you find a good food for him? I'm looking for an alternate food for my Donozo's sphincter/mega-esophagus/sliding hernia problem. He takes Cisapride 3 times daily (prescription) because he was regurgitating his food 6-12 times a day

I'm sorry to hear about Donozo's issues. It's so frustrating when we just want them to feel better!
We are back to where we started with Nature's Recipe, canned. It's not the highest quality but it is the only one his stomach seems to tolerate (ie: no diarrhea). I'm not sure how you feel about homeopathic remedies but we also started Oliver on an all-natural (approved by our vet) Digestive capsule. It has ingredients like Marshmallow bark and Slippery Elm which coats the esophagus and stomach. (these are the same ingredients in Throat Coat tea which is awesome for humans when you have a sore throat!) He gets one with breakfast and one with dinner. We open the capsule and put it right into his food. He also gets one regular-strength Pepcid at bedtime. He no longer regurgitates!!!!! (he still vomits a little when excited) The down-side is he has gained some weight from keeping his food down. LOL!
