Hi, good morning...
Has anyone had their puppies on the Fromm Heartland Gold Large Breed Puppy food?
https://frommfamily.com/products/gold/dog/dry/#heartland-gold-large-breed-puppy

The regular Gold large Breed Puppy is the Blue bag but there is a second variety which is the Gold and Blue bag the Heartland line it is the Grain-Free.

The Nutrition Specialist at Fromm (who was very helpful) recommends that Leroy be on the Heartland Gold Large Breed Puppy exclusively until at least 11-13 months because he has the potential to exceed 50 pounds.

They emailed me the following...
"Fromm Large Breed Puppy recipes were created especially to accommodate these needs, offering a great nutritional option that will help them to mature properly without the concerns of growing too fast or developing joint issues etc. This will include a lower fat and protein percentage, lower calcium and phosphorus percentage, as well as the appropriate amount of Vitamin D, and so on. Additionally, we recommend that a large breed puppy recipe be fed until the growth plates of your puppy fully close. Large Breed Puppy Gold uniquely presents a balanced amount of nutrients to prevent accelerated growth during this very important period of your puppy's life. The bigger the dog the more time it takes for the growth plates to close.

Growth especially in the first 6 to 7 months is unregulated in our puppies as the organs involved are not even matured yet. For example, the Thyroid gland. This typically produces hormones that regulate the amount of Ca taken in from the diet into the bloodstream to where it needs to go for whatever purposes needed in the body. However, this is not even really active in the early months as it is maturing itself. Thus, we have to come up with a way to control the nutrition density of the diet so it does not “ go wild”. So, we need to offer a diet with right nutrient balance -- Large Breed Puppy Recipes.

With that in mind, I would strongly recommend putting your puppy onto a dedicated Large Breed Puppy recipe going forward. Although the Four Star recipes, such as the Beef Frittata Veg, are formulated to support all life stages, including the growth of some puppies, the Large Breed puppy recipe is going to be most appropriate in terms of calcium and phosphorus requirements for large breed puppies. Once we have plateaued in the growth curve at about 11-13 months then we can certainly switch to a Four Star recipe if we wish!

I have fed my male pup Fromm Heartland Gold Grain-Free Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food since he was 9 weeks old. His dad is tall, lean (for a EB) and 65 lbs. so I figured he would easily be over 50. Now at 10.5 months Dozer is 19" at the shoulder and about 55 lbs., he still looks like a big pup even though his chest and front shoulders are big. His hindquarters have just started to fill out and not look totally scrawny despite feeding 1.5 cups 2x a day since 4 months old (he got 1 cup 3x a day before that).

As of right now, think I'm going to stick to the Puppy food until one year then switch to Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Grain-Free Hasen Duckenpfeffer Dry Dog Food. Grain free just makes sense to me and EB's seem to benefit from staying away from them. Chicken has never done anything but cause problems with dogs I've had so I just steer clear and I really like Fromm... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
