Default interesting visit today at the vet's office

took my baby to the vet's office today for his rabies shot. told her what food i was feeding him and she suggested i switch to science diet. stated that another one of her patient's bulldog was on fromms and did terrible on it. claimed that it was terrible for his coat. i told her how well my dog has done on it since switching from royal canin but still recommended i switch his food. i definitely respect her position as a vet but i just cant fathom the thought of me switiching him from fromms when louie is doing perfectly fine with it. just had to vent a little haha sorry! happy friday everyone

I will just let you know from my experience that MY vet pulled the same rant, and told me that Fromm's was "bad" for bulldogs. I pressed him for more details, plus told him that plenty of people on EBN have used Fromm's w/great results!!! He immediately back tracked after that… Plus you KNOW that most vet's offices push that science diet CRAP because they get a pay-off for it. That was the LAST time I go to any vet for food advice… LOL

I just took Bocephus in today for his rabies shot as well, among other things. My vet sells Science Diet - you know they must get some type of commission on it. As long as your baby is doing well, leave him on Fromm.

Yes, they get a commisson of sorts on whatever they sell in the office... SD, RC, Hill's etc. My vet sells all of those and has always told me, they are meant for specific issues and short term use. He LOVES that my babies are on Fromm and agrees it is a great food.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Most vets I've ever been in to all carry Science Diet and Royal Canine. I remember when I took Wilson in for his 8 week wellness check when I got him. The vet that he saw (one of the head vets but not my norm), first told me that people should breed bulldogs because they have nothing but problems and then tried to give me their courtesy 5lb bag. I told him that I didn't want that since I feel better stuff. I refrained from telling him off for his other comment but I got my just due. I wrote to the director of the facility and my normal vet and complained about what happened and I've never been back. This facility has been on Animal Planet too. I know have a great bulldog vet. It's surprising though how little vets know about what food is out there.

    Welcome to EBN too.

Changing your bully's food when they are doing well is a dumb idea. Changing
to an unhealthy food from a balanced, nutritious food is even dumber. Good
for you in staying the course and thumbs up for your intelligence!

Cami went to a Vet I've taken my other breeds to but not her, a bulldog. She had
injured her hind leg then developed a limp. After rest/confinement hadn't worked,
I took her in. While there he went on & on about her obesity and suggested a diet
version of Science Diet. I asked the ingredients & he hemmed/hawed around. Later,
as he's dxing torn ACL & surgery, he brought up putting her on this weight again,
saying 'the weight just falls off them' so I asked him to bring it in. The 1st FOUR in-
gredients are Wheat, Corn, Soybean & Soybean something, all crap! I informed him,
I avoid them myself and Cami's food contains none of them either. The key to weight
loss is, less food, more activity...simple, common sense. Cami came to me overweight
alth she's lost 5 lbs (65 lbs from 70 lbs) and she hates activity, lol Hates walking, playing,
etc! Loves to eat & lay around, I feed her 2 x daily, a cup of TOTW's grainfree, Bison &
Venison but have reduced that to 3/4 cup each time with half cup green beans. With her
limp I'm now going to get more serious and give 1/2 cup kibble with 1 cup green beans,
twice daily with low cal snack mid day. She's 6 now and a big framed girl, I'm aiming for
55-58 lbs. Looking for Specialist to sedate her and do a more though exam w/x-rays.
    She's on Day 5 of 10 days of Previcox, a newer anti-inflammatory w/pain reliever. I will
be putting her on GlycoFlex (strengthens & promotes cartilege growth) Duralactin (super
version of lactic acid in Coconut Oil and a natural anti viral-strengthens immune system)
and a natural pain reliever-name escapes me) as he did find arthritis in her lame knee.
So...hoping she can heal w/out ACL surgery, a long, difficult recovery Will let y'all know.

    My 1st bully, Brutus
    RIP beloved boy.

In 1978 when I got my very first bulldog, the breeder would not use Science Diet and would not sell me a puppy if I did...that along with many other restrictions, all of which I would never consider anyway. Long story short, she lost a full litter to bloating, and had fed science diet. She called them and of course they denied any connection, but she checked further and found that a couple of dairy farmers had sued and won over the same issue, and many of the ingredients were the same. They showed little if any concern and were very rude. I wouldn't feed it if it was the only food available, I'd make my own!

When a vet recommends a food he doesn't sell then maybe you can listen. Why recommend a switch when a dog is obviously doing well on what he's currently on?

hi guys just wanted to give an update on louie. he's still on fromm's beef fritatta and doing fantastic. took him to the vet to have his nails clipped today, and met a very kind/knowledgeable lady with a 7 year old bulldog(the bulldog was beautiful. thought it was 2 or 3 but it turned out it was 7 years old(amazed by how good it looked)!! beautiful wrinkles no tear stains amazing coat). She was so kind gave me all sorts of advice on bulldogs. been a bulldog owner since the 80's. commented to her about how the vet told me to get my dog on royal canin or science diet and she just shook her head. (didnt want to insult the brands outloud since it was kind of packed in the vets office today) Told me about how beneficial coconut oil was for our bulldogs, how vets try to give bulldogs more shots than needed(yearly shot im assuming which she expressed is unnecessary stopped giving dog shots after Parvo vaccine) ended up asking her about the dogs diet. she fed him raw up until it became to much of a hassle so switched to a food called Organix (never heard of it). told her how i have my pup on fromm's turns out she's from wisconsin knew how good the food was. we exchanged information and told me if i ever had any questions just to contact her! so glad i ran into her!!!
