Fromm pork and peas = tear stains. Trying Taste of the Wild.

Walley-Bubba has been on Fromm Pork and Peaks for the past 3-4 months.
The results have been very good, poop perfect not smelly like with the EVO Chicken & Turkey.

But he has developed really bad tear stains.
This despite wiping his face wrinkles with a wet cloth.
And then drying them with a dry cloth.
Doing that twice a day,

Our breeder, Dom at Bricktops Kennels noticed the tear stains in a recent Stinson Beach picture.
Yes, we maintain a great relationship with WB's breeder - almost family now.
Dom suggested we try Taste of the Wild Venison which is what his dogs get.
He also sent us pictures of Walley-Bubba's sister, Pebbles, and their mother, Bonnie.
Both of his dogs have snow white faces, no sign of tear stains at all.

So Ann got Taste of the Wild High Prairie Canine Formula with Roasted Bison & Roasted Venison.
And we started WB on a 50-50 mix of the new food and the old.
He seems to really like the new food!
Ann fed him a little extra by hand which he relished
Shadow, the Yorkie, likes it too.
Anne got the new food at PetFoodExpress just up the street.

The label is interesting.
The food is made with purified water.
Contains antioxidants.
And has ingredients to aid digestion, which will help Shadow.
Even recommended a gradual transition from the old food to the new

We will post the results in a few days when the 100% switch to the new food is complete.
And we have a better feel for how his poops are and whether or not the tear stains issue is solved.

Thanks.

Look forward to your review of this kibble
Ace is on Merricks Whole Earth Farms and has little to no staining but as with any kibble I guess they eventually get tired of the same thing so I mix up portions of other kibble from time to time [with about 70% WEF and 30% or so of different Fromm blends] and have never tried TOTW but if you get good results I may add some of that to his kibble mix as well.

Definitely would love to see reviews too. It's a never ending battle keeping Curlys face white. We are feeding him blue wilderness but I think we may make a switch too but not sure to what yet

Interesting. With Zeus being all white. I definitely want to know the outcome. Zeus is 2yrs and has been on blue buffalo he's in great shape minus the tear stains.. Just curious what the prize on that. (Not that it matters but good to know)

Ann got the 5lb sack for about $14 including tax.
We chose a small bag in case the dogs didn't like it or were allergic so less to throw away.
So far so good though, poops fine just now.
Sure hope it clears up the tear stains.
White is the hardest color to keep clean.

I have heard good things about TOTW. My boxer is on Earthborn and she's doing great... I may try TOTW w/Winston as well or Earthborn. Same issues here the dang tear stains... it's a never ending battle. Thanks for the info, and keep us posted as to how it works w/Walley :D

Omy yes. So hard. I'll check it out. At the store we go to their is 100% guarantee on any food as long as you don't use more than half. In case of allergy or if they don't like it. Zeus has a beautiful white color when he is clean. A lot of people always stop us to say how white he is. I think it because some dogs even though white look yellowish. I had a pit bull no matter how much we scrubbed him he was yellowish across his back. Maybe it was the sun since he was mostly an outside dog.

The tear stains could also be from seasonal allergies. If you want to try another food, if I were you, I would try another grain free food from FROMM, this way you do not need to do a transition, because with any FROMM 4 star food, you can switch between proteins without a transition.

Good luck, TOTW is a good food but the manufacturer 'Diamond Pet Foods' has had many recalls.

Tear stains can be from food but also from:

Allergies
Entropion
Wrinkle bacterial or yeast infection
Watery eyes
Teething

Hope it works well for you! I've tried it in the past a few years back. It was okay but didn't harbor any amazing results so I tried a different food. But what works for one bully doesn't always work for another. Luckily if his parents do well on it he likely will too.

Winston is transitioning from Fromm pink puppy to Pork and Peas and his tear stains are actually getting better. But all dogs are different I suppose.

Thanks for all the comments.
His tear stains were checked by the vet.
Even a shot of antibiotics didn't make any difference.
We thought he had an eye infection in his right eye.
But nothing came back from any of the tests.
Even his regular vet, who is very thorough and re-tested everything, found nothing.
She even performed an air pressure test as well as a black light test.
The tear stains sure seem like they started when we switched to Fromm.

I'm going to try and keep track of any changes with the new food.
I'll do that here if nobody minds since this is the most convenient place for me.

Here's a picture of WB on 09/28/2013.
017.jpg

Click on it to see the larger size.
But even with the small size, the tear stain is quite noticeable
The other side is about the same.
He has been on Fromm Pork and Peas since about July 8th according to my emails from PetFlow.

I'll post another picture in a week or so assuming the 100% transition to the new food is complete by Monday.

what kind of water u givng.him?

Good question. Tap water. Could be another cause of the tear staining no doubt.
But first, we will finish the transition to TOTW.
Both dogs seem to really like the new food.
Shadow (Yorkie) is really picky and for two days now he's eaten the TOTW and left the Fromm.
WB is now switched over to the new food 100% and so far poops are still perfect and tear stains seem a little lighter with less yeasty smell.
But it's still very early.

Eve...good job w/Zeus...do you give distilled or filtered water as I find it helps.

On TOTW, the large bag (I think about 40 lbs) is usually around $46-$48 for
the Bison/Venison and a little more for Salmon. I feed Cami this and have fed
a couple other of their grain free flavors as well, she does good on them, less
gas, no itchies, no eye goop, and she likes it (boar not so much). I'm on a strict
budget and it seems to be a good food for a good price.
