I bake treats for my girls and they always get one before my husband leaves for work. They also get one in the evenings after our walk. The only other time they get a treat is for bath time (half before and half after). We are very careful to measure food and not overfeed our babies. They do get to lick spoons/bowls from time to time and they think they are in heaven!!!
I give actual treats when I leave the house and after meds, baths, or face cleanings. I do keep dog food (Royal Canin bulldog formula-it has the bigger odd shaped nuggets) in one treat jar and give them a kibble or two periodically throughout the day, after potty and such. The best part is, a piece of their food is exciting for them just because it comes out of a treat jar! And believe me they know that jar by sight and sound and "treat" is something we have to spell out in my house cuz they know what that word means
