Lady has had quite a life up until now, but things are getting better for her. She was found in the desert, emaciated and near death. She has clearly been used for breeding, so we suspect that she was left in the desert when her breeders were done with her. She had to have the tip of her tongue amputated, and she’s lost some teeth that were broken (probably from eating rocks). Despite all of this, she is actually a really healthy, spunky, energetic, and playful girl with a lot of love to give. She is starting to gain back some weight and her coat is shiny and soft. We think she’s probably about 3 or 4.
Lady is one of the snuggliest, cuddliest, silliest bulldogs you’ll ever meet. She does not act like a typical bulldog. She wants to be on her foster mom’s lap allllllll day (which can actually be really annoying when foster mom is trying to work!). When she gets too excited, she sometimes needs a time-out in her crate, but she loves the crate. She will need an owner who knows how to set clear boundaries, but she will love her owner unconditionally. She’s incredibly loyal. When she came back from her first walk in her foster home, she got so excited to see her house again. She is clearly thrilled to have a home of her own with comfy beds and food. We see signs of progress in her every day. She’s recently started laying out in the sun with her foster brother during the day. When she sees the leashes come out, she starts wiggling so hard that she’s knocked the other dogs over with her excitement.
Lady’s biggest challenge now is learning how to be a pet. She’s made unbelievable progress while in her foster home, but she will need an owner with patience and time to spend on training. She’s done Adult Dog Level 1 training at Petco and would LOVE to continue with more classes. She’s very smart and very treat-motivated. She learns quickly and wants to please her owners. She has a lot of residual fear from being in the desert. She’s especially afraid at night. She’s afraid of ceiling fans and things (including people) coming at her in her peripheral vision. This makes sense if she was always on the lookout for predators. She very much wants to be with her pack (two other bulldogs in foster), but she does get very scared when they get up and move in the night. She also gets a bit territorial over food, beds, and toys. She’s doing much better, but if she’s in a home with other dogs, she will need constant supervision. Most of the time she just wants to cuddle and play with the others, but when she gets scared she can snarl and snap at them.
Lady is much more active than a typical bulldog, probably because of her weight. She loves to run, jump, and play. She would be a great pet for someone looking for an active bulldog. She does get skittish on walks when she hears loud, unexpected noises, but she has endless energy. She’s also been to the park and has met other dogs. She has never shown any aggression toward other dogs at the park.
We can’t even imagine what Lady went through before she was found and brought to rescue, but we know it wasn’t a good life. She deserves a home where she will be loved and appreciated for being a fighter and a survivor, even though she’s got some work to do. She will give her owner unconditional love in return for a safe home with firm rules and boundaries
